Well, this convinced me to go ahead and order that Wenger Blaze 55 I've been eyeing up for a while now.  Yesterday I received a tool chest plus from eBay that I got fairly cheap.  Was gonna mod it. Now not so sure.  Ah, I'll mod it.

I know, German ebay is my new favorite place to shop.  5 alox saks, total shipping was 5 euro... got here in 10 days.  The cheap shipping from the US just went up to 8 bucks from 3 something it was before.  So... kinda makes german ebay attractive to me.  Ive made 6 purchases so far, all smooth perfect transactions.

Time for me to buy that Evo 88 I've been wanting...

As soon as the 1st rolls around, I'll get an S14 while I can too.

Does it seem a bit odd that Vic would discontinue the Wenger knife line but unveil a new single blade oho knife at SHOT , why not just re-badge the single blade Ranger   I so wish they would still incorporate the swiss shield as an unlock button , that feature is so cool :multi:

That is a very nice feature; I like it a LOT more than the bass-ackwards way the liner lock on the OH 111's works.  (Sorry Lynn... I know that as a south-paw you love the way it works, but unfortunately 89% of the world's population are righties.    )

I know this has already been beaten to death in this thread, but my hope is that what we'll see is a minimal loss of the Wenger models, and that they'll incorporate as much of the Wenger line into the Vic line as possible.  I'm hoping that means the 84 mm Vics will be dropped and replaced by a more robust line of the 85 mm Wengers, rebranded with the Vic logo.  I'm also hoping that some of the great innovations in the Wengers, like the locking flatheat/cap-lifter will be incorporated into the Vics, and that the great design of the Evo scales will be available as an option for both the 85 and 91 mm lines; in other words, Evo scales will be swappable back and forth with cellidor scales.  I'd also like to see Vic incorporate Wenger's method of storing the T&T; much neater and cleaner IMHO, with less chance of accidentally loosing those items.

Cynical me does suspect that Wenger and Victorinox are fully aware of the massive surge this will create in last minute...must have..spending sprees. Sales will probably go through the roof - everyone buying for investments, keepsakes etc etc, which ultimately means there will be a glutton of all the modern wenger variants. - And if no set deadline has yet been announced...LOL..they'll probably triple/quadruple their annual turnover!

I'm pretty certain given the fact that wenger is world famous - the news will no doubt make it onto mainstream news channels, thus sparking off truly colossal consumer fever...

Hmm...clever people them swiss!!     very clever indeed!! :tu:

But .... for "normal" people i.e. not us freaks  :P There might be other thoughts such as ...

"I ain't buying one of them, there'll be no warranty now" (not thinking that Victorinox may pick up the aftersales side)

"Who?"

"I'll not get one of those, they can't have been any good if they went pop"

I think they'll move quickly on it as the vast majority of their customer base are not collectors but people just wanting cheap multifunction knives. It makes more commercial sense to me for them to get stuck in remodelling and reorganising (if they haven't already done so)

Yes, I think collectors make up only a very small portion of the customer base too, certainly for currently available models anyway.

There may be a bit of a sell off feeding frenzy yet... time will tell :)

I take your point, but beg to differ.

No disrepect intended, but I think to assume that people like us here on MT'o would likely be the frenzied mob rushing out and snapping up all stocks up is a little tough to chew. Almost everybody male/female young/old has heard of the "Swiss Army Knife".
If we care to look at past ad campaigns especially throughout the 80's - it becomes apparent that little red knife was almost universally accepted as a byword for quality and reliability. Indeed many of the ads were nothing remotely linked to the sale or promotion of knives themselves but yet were keen to be regarded as being as good as.

The argument of the warranty is a little thin, as is the assumption that people will assume they were an inferior brand

I would have thought that Wengers demise would and indeed should  make it onto mainstream news networks, this would undoubtably be shown with a short but condensed narrative highlighting the rise and fall of one of, if not 'the' most iconic brand name of the past century. And for the sake of £20/30 I personally think people will buy simply to own a slice of history.

We'll see.........

I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Glad I picked up my S557 a few years ago. It has all the uniquely Wenger features in one package. I ought to pick up a Clipper AT before its too late.

It's a shame. Wenger was always so experimental, and willing to try new things. If Vic can integrate even half of that spirit into their knife line I'll be satisfied.

I think, based on the press release, that Noone needs to worry about the Wenger models...it appears to me that they will merely be rebranded as Victorinox...but maybe, to avoid redundancy in the product line, we may see the discontinuation of 84mm Vics...it would make more sense, to me at least, if Delemont factory will still be producing knives, to use existing stock, machines and tooling rather the build essentially another Vic factory.

It would be interesting to compare sakes numbers of 84mm Vics vs 85mm Wengers...if Wengers outsold the 84mm Vics, this would seem like a good plan.

R.I.P. Wenger.

I always preferred the Wenger logo - square with rounded corners. Looks much cleaner and minimalistic than the somewhat dusty Vic shield. Wenger was my first SAK.

This sucks.

Change sucks sometimes.  Wenger was my first too.  A Traveller bought at Target about 14 years ago.  Though I much prefer Vic today.

I too find  the Wenger cross better looking than the Vic.

I woke up this morning, and I don't know why, but I suddenly realized that I left three (  ) Wengers at my ex-gf's crib. Two Rangers, and an Evo S557. The rangers no idea why, but I gave the 557 to her as a present. If only I knew in advance...

I read about W85 and V84 lines and as others put it it seems to me that the V91 is analogue to the W85 (Officier knife with multiple layers and 3 rivets).  On the other hand W85 has most of the special tools. Victorinox will have as property the Wenger's machines and could produce Wenger-like Limited Editions (50-100 knives) for you collectors. And the 93mm's future remains unknown. It could merge with 91mm as the XAVT shows (with the 93mm's awl). Rangers already mentioned, it would be a pity to discontinue them.
It'll be very interesting to wait and see what will happen.
