Vic CyberTool or MT?
on: February 13, 2013, 11:26:19 PM
I am thinking about getting a Cybertool and wanted some opinions on them.

Do you think they are better/worse/different or what?  Just looking to see if people actually use and prefer them over multitools.

I know it depends on what I want to do with it but I like the Cybertool Lite setup but want to know if it is worth the $80+ for one!

Also I would like to know if they have replaceable bits or additional bit types available?

Thx.

I own all 4 versions 29, 34, 41 and lite. If I had to pick just one for EDC it would be the 41. The lite version omits the woodsaw, metal saw, wood chisel and small slotted screwdriver over the CT41, but gains the lite and magnifier. In my view the CT-Lite is really for IT personel. It's very  IT tool specific, if that makes sense.

However to compare with an MT is surely like comparing apples and oranges. You have basically answered your own query - it depends what you need. Of the two?.... If the law permitted I would choose the Vic Spirit anyday over the CT41, as it is I'd be forced to go for the CT41.

Me personally, I carry the leatherman wave and a sak. I use the sak for the small jobs and wave when a more beefy tool is needed.

Yeah, I understand IT people have purchased them but I dont find them much different tool wise than some MT's so I wouldnt say they are just for IT folks and I am one or was one, I quit doing it cause I got bored with it. :)

So you dont really want to use or should I say carry the CT but you are forced to?  Do you actually use them?

The problem with a MT like the Wave is to get the extra couple of bits, you either have to carry in a pouch or sepereately and they dont come with the MT so you have to buy extra bits.

No I don't carry any of them - TBH I picked up the 29, 34 for peanuts, heard about the 41 being discontinued so paid full whack and then thought what the hell and purchased the lite sometime after at a rather paltry discount. The only one I'm now missing is the Yeoman Cybertool. then hopefully I'll have the set. I can't believe I've turned into a collector of sorts, that was absolutely never my intention, but this forum....................!! jeez  :ahhh

I basically decided I wanted ALL the Vics with built in Bit Drivers!! for some strange and stupid reason

I have a CT34 in the coffee table drawer as my grab tool for simple house stuff, and a CT41 in a Maxped Micro EDC Pouch which is a kind of mini travelling tool kit when going away for the weekend or whatever.

However ... both the coffee table drawer and the Maxped pouch have pliers based tools too. Which would I grab first between the pliers based and the knife based? Depends on what needs doing.

I think they're great tools - but like all multitools, they're not a single tool solution and work best when paired with something complimentary. The classic example is needing to hold a nut still whilst screwing something into it .... two tools required  ;)

I have a 34.  The driver is fantastic, and I love how the bits fold inside.  That said, I'd prefer the 29; the 34 is just too wide for me; plus I find the SAK pliers...not very useful. I can't even picture carrying a 41.

I find that a Cybertool Lite in my pocket and a Leatherman Charge TTi on my belt is my favorite work configuration.  These tools compliment each other.

In my defence, I naturally assumed he'd be carrying a pouch - especially as he's debating EDCing an MT.

I probably wouldnt carry it in my pocket but more likely grabbed on the way out the door and put in jacket pocket.

I too like the tools within itself and I like the Lite version cause then I would have a light if needed and mag glass which I use alot looking at coins, some jewelry for seeing carat stamp, etc.

I am afraid that it might end up as a collector piece as I have an Explorer, LM Charge, Juice's and others that might get carried but I do think about whether or not Victorinox will quit making them and then I would probably wish I got one.

I think that $80-82 isnt a bad price from what I seen for the Lite version but I also like the 29 one, which is about $60 as it is slimmer so I think I might actually carry it in pocket and could back that up with a Charge MT!  :ahhh

I currently own both a 41 and a Lite.  I tend to carry the 41 in a small holster on the strap of my EDC bag, but occasionally carry the Lite instead.  I tended to carry the Lite on my belt until I made myself a Yeoman; at my age the mag-glass comes in very handy!

Of the two, I prefer the Lite for EDC.  I rarely need the saw or file, and the mag-glass in general is more useful to me.  I'm planning on getting another 34; I traded the one I had and although I have no regrets about doing the trade, now I'm finding I miss having the 34 for a slimmer option.

Overall though, I really like the Cybertool in general.  I'm not an IT guy, and while I do occasionally have to deal with computer equipment, it's the bits and tool selection that make the CT really a great SAK for me.

I really prefer the mag glass too as I spend some time looking at coins and jewelry.  I have only one good eye since I was about 10 years old and had an eye surgery that was blotched.  This is why I lean towards the Lite cause it does have the mag glass. :)

Wow, that's a shame; sorry to hear about your misfortune, Mike.

FWIW, someone suggested a mod where a SAK would have both an old and a new mag-glass in the knife, set up so they were side by side on the same end of the tool.  That way, either or both could be used and provide three different levels of total magnification.  (It'd also be a good way to put both a lite and an in-line phillips in the same tool as well! :D )

My personal grail CT would be one with an extra bit holder in it, to double the number of bits you could carry in the knife.  Not sure how to cover them without putting a second driver in, but perhaps one could be modified to be a cover or something like the long nail file that was on some of the more exotic older Vics from the past.

I see why you might like the mag glass now... tricky without a mod.

Personally I really like the 34 and sometimes pocket carry it. It has enough for most of my needs and I find it coming in really handy. BTW, have you considered throwing a Fresnel lens in your wallet?

Cybertools are great. They aren't just for electronic equipment but for every type of screw except very stubborn ones made from very hard metal. I use the Cybertool 50 (Swisschamp XLT) but I think the best option is Cybertool 41 for urban use (and Swisschamp for outdoors). It is nice to have more tools/ options at hand.
Multitools are another story. They are tools for handymen. With a SAK you can make delicate work, fix toys, manicure nails, do origami etc. A Multitool is searching for more mainstream repair work on my opinion. Most multitool "blades" are found in SAKs and the opposite isn't true. Locking and one hand opening of certain blades is a plus, as is the full scale pliers. But most times these features aren't needed and might be illegal in some islands where they don't drive on the right side of the road. On the other hand these are the only ones I miss with my SAKs. But a separate blade can give you those options in a lighter manner, from an Opinel Outdoors to a Spyderco or any double blade folder (such as a Smith & Wesson). So the (almost) full scale plier remains a Multitool's (almost) sole specialty. With some exceptions now, provided by Wenger (who knows for how long)  The opposite isn't true. Have you ever seen a Multitool with a spatula? :)

No, that's not a pharmaceutical spatula, sorry. It is a caviar spoon, that goes with the salmon fork and butter knife. The pliers is there for when you'd like Chinese food.

I am not blind, just cant read dates on coins or carat stamps on jewelry that easy anymore.  It might also be partly due to me gettting very close to the 50 year old mark! LOL

That is a good thought but I dont normally carry a wallet.  I only grab mine from my desk at home if I know I will need a credit card.  Otherwise I just carry ID, debit card and some cash in front left pocket. :D
