Leatherman Bits
on: February 25, 2013, 09:59:29 AM
Hello.
I have a quick question.
Are the Leatherman flat bits usable with a normal 6mm Hex Bit Adaptor?
If I get them and I find the Surge too big for them some times, is it possible to get a small standalone bit adaptor and use them? or use them with the Swisschamp adaptor I improvised/
thank you.

No, well yes if you drill out the magnet, otherwise they are too long.

Oh! I forgot that they are double bits. Then I have to buy their extender.

I bought the bits but they didn't have the adapter. Some of the bits (the large and rectangular ones) fit in the adapter. Most don't fit exactly and have different amounts of play.
They didn't have the adapter. I suppose that it is easy to use it as standalone as I can see by the non-slip character of the stem. isn't that so?

EDIT
I bought the bits but they didn't have the LM adapter. Some of the bits (the large and rectangular ones) fit in the improvised adapter. Most don't fit exactly and show some play.

I hope it is comprehensible now.

You can use the bit adaptor by itself but you can't get much torque down on to it. It's a finger-tips screwdriver rather than a full have screwdriver if you see what I mean. Of course if you start the screw with it in the Surge's bit holder then do the easy bit just spinning in your fingers it works well.

The other issue with it is that it's meant (obviously) for the LM flat bits which are relatively long. If you put a "normal" 1/4" bit in it disappears down inside the holder and you only get a tiny bit sticking out of the top. And then I sometimes need the LM pliers to get it back out again!

Just grind a normal adaptor down, works great!

I've got a couple like this but also a longer one done using a screwdriver bit adapter, i just cut it off above the handle and grinded it flat  :tu:

I missed all the comments, thank you very much.
I have the bits but I don't have my Surge yet. I have an expendable adapter to grind down but not the machinery to do it, so I'll ask a pro to do it. But since I don't do hard handwork the bit kit seems to suit me. I always carry a Swisschamp XLT anyway.
