Anything not anodized in black?
on: March 06, 2008, 06:25:52 AM
Just wondering- with kayak season coming up I have to wonder if there are any lights with metal bodies that are anodized in brighter colors like Dayglo orange or yellow?  Most of teh brightly colored flashlights I see have plastic bodies and I prefer aluminum or steel.

I haven't seen any, but type II anodize is available in bright colors, as we saw with aluminum bicycle parts and from the 80's/90's.  Older Maglites were available in bright colors also, as you're no doubt aware.  Nowadays you see natural (gold/silver), olive (like Surefire, Novatac, etc.), and black.  This is mainly due to the move toward hard anodizing (type III), and the limited dyes that work with that finish.

Don't discount plastic bodies.  The lights that are truly waterproof--with depth ratings--are made of plastic, from makers like Streamlight, Princeton-Tec and Underwater Kinetics.

Terry brings up a good point, for around water usage I'd prefer plastic bodies for the brightness and water floating/resistance abilities,
and they seem to be made way better now. Now you got me searching/wanting a good one for that!

Streamlight makes some nice flashlights in bright colors, and Surefire's G2 comes in yellow with a yellow aluminum head now. This is nice for the heatsinking an aluminum head offers over the standard nitrolon. As for an all aluminum light that is bright  ??? ??? AFAIK your almost stuck with the MAG stuff - not that it's bad.

I have a Princeton-Tec Tec 40 and I am very impressed with it.

I hope the flashlight manufacturers will make flashlights in different pastel colors like these. If different colors will be available most of us will be tempted to buy one color each of our favorite flashlight/s. As posted by WD, Fenix E01 is already available in 5 different colors, I hope more colors will be added.

I think the problem is type III HA anodizing with colors hasn't been easy until of late.
type III is a very durable finish and really takes a serious beating.

are those type III HA anodizing Eddie?

I don't know what type of anodizing method was used but I am satisfied with its quality.

I already used the blue one at the leftmost for 3 months already. Only the markings were erased but the anodized finished remains unscratched. The gold one at the rightmost is also used but for one month only and it is still like new. The anodized surface is really hard.

The pic Eddie posted are definitely type II.

I think some people might be disappointed with the E01 colors when they receive them.  Type III (HA) colors are dark and very difficult to achieve a good, consistent color match.  The colors will likely be darker than Fenix shows them, and shifted in tint one way or the other.
