Hi, new here from the UK - MUT modding.
on: February 28, 2013, 02:56:09 PM
Hi everyone, very pleased to join, learnt a lot from browsing.  Like everyone it's hard to find the exactly perfect tool but at present for me the MUT comes close.  Only thing I would really like is the Surge ability to add saws and other custom files etc.

Is there any way to add a Surge type T fitting saw holder?  Failing this I did think of modding/grinding a few flat (spade) type drill bits with the hex shank to fit into the existing MUT bit holder and riveting separate blades or files to each one to make a selection of interchangeable tools (saws, files, awls, spikes etc), anyone done similar?

And has anyone modded the bronze scraper to use as an awl or similar or removed it to fit other parts?

Lastly - the threaded punch/C4 tool - I understand that Otis cleaning bits rods and tools fit on here, are there any common fittings in the UK that also use this thread - again be interested to see what others have fitted or used this for?

Welcome!

I know for sure that the pivots on the saw on the MUT and the surge are a match, however the locking mechanism maybe off.

I once made a stainless steel awl to replace the bronze one. I sent it off to another member, I could never trust myself to bear down it since it doesn't lock.

The thread is 8-32 which is a pretty common imperial thread size so if you can come up with anything, it would work. I've seen other tools that use this size for a dental pick, etc.

I want to do this mod myself with the Surge blade exchanger. I just can't bring myself to buying a surge just for that part

Thanks for the welcome chaps!

Searching around I found this superb topic on saws:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,95.0.html

Awesome stuff - is J-sews still making these or similar?

I am wondering if there is a market for professionally manufactured third party parts for the MUT and Wave in particular - the two main models that I am familiar with.

To give some background I am involved with a large engineering company here in the UK speSmurfpillsing in bespoke machined components of every type for motorbikes and high end pedal bikes - all materials are possible but mainly various high grades of heat treated aluminium alloy, chrom-moly, stainless steel etc.

Thinking in particular a steel awl to replace the MUT bronze scraper, a plug in long awl for the bit driver, a 1/4" socket attachment again to fit the bit driver and maybe to slot in instead of the bronze scraper, a saw blade holder etc, etc.

I have no clues about the market size out there - this is really, really niche stuff but if anyone can give input on what parts may be popular I could see what's possible and get some samples made...

G'day & welcome Maxi  :D :D

I have often wondered about using a Surge's diamond file & try to mod it too fit it into the MUT's bit holder   , not sure if it would work

Thanks guys, one last call to see if there is any real interest in commercially available high spec machined accessories for the MUT, Wave etc - not much response so don't really want to take it further if no interest!

I for one would be interested but like you said it's a very niche product. The biggest draw back on the awl position on the MUT is the lack of awl.

As for other blades and stuff, pair of scissors replacing the saw would be great. I managed to sneak a pair into the extra bit slot and then sold the tool to a member.

How would you get a file to fit in the bit holder? Wouldn't it just fall out when you were on the pull stroke?

The only Wave part I think I'd be interested in is based on a mod I saw here. It allowed the mini screwdriver bit to go in the large bit holder, thereby freeing up the space to put something else in.

Oh, and I guess I'd be interested in scissors that fitted when you put a Rebar head in and something to put in the slot vacated by the mini screwdriver.

The toolbits are locked into place mate , wether the lock would be strong enough too hold a moded file would be interesting too know   , it is not a heavy duty lock , more to stop the bit from falling out

They are from a Surge, I didn't replace the scraper, it is in the slot where the Torx long bit would be and the pin pusher. I removed the plastic spacer bit.

Here is the whole build:
