Spydercos

I'm copying and pasting this post from the Spyderco forums. These were shown in Amsterdam at the show as prototypes.

Spyderco 2013 Concept Model – ClipiTool

I have seen earlier versions of this ClipiTool concept model over the years, and it’s impressive to see how an idea became a design and now a production quality tool. The ClipiTool features a blade similar to a Ladybug and a tool. The three ClipiTool concept models featured either a pair of scissors, serrated sheepsfoot blade or a bottlecap opener/screwdriver tool.

All the blades/tools featured a forefinger choil for control, and a measure of safety since these ClipiTools were slipits. I could easily open the knife blades with one hand, and the round holes for the tools seemed to work better for me than a regular small nailnick in tools of this size. Personally, I would prefer these small tools to be a bit lighter, perhaps with G10 or FRN instead of steel for the handle scales?

For the ClipiTool concept models, the approximate specifications are:

Knife Blade / Scissors / Bottle Cap Opener Tool Length: 5,7 cm / 2.24 inch
    Overall Length: 11,8 cm / 4.64 inch

Now if they would just make them

I'd have to try at least one.

 Spyderco 2013 Concept Model – Chaparral 3

Something new for this year’s Amsterdam Meet was the fact that some of the knives that I could publish still had a ‘concept model’ designation on the accompanying tag. In previous years, you could only publish ‘production prototypes’ and not ‘concept models’. This Chaparral came with a tag on the table that said ‘concept model’.

This is the third Chaparral in the series. All Chaparral designs are made in Taiwan, feature the same CTS XHP blade steel, the same lock and the same blade. However, every edition will feature a new handle material – or variation thereof, I guess. Like the previous Stealth Chaparral, this one featured a titanium handle. The decorated pattern on this Chaparral 3 blew my proverbial mind! I hope it comes across in the pics, but in real life this was really impressive to me. It’s like someone studied Escher’s works for inspiration.

Considering all the machining needed for this pattern – I wouldn’t expect this one to come cheap. Still, this would be an awesome collector piece! I want one!

For the Chaparral 3 concept model the approximate specifications are:
Blade length: 7,3 cm / 2.87 inch
Overall Length: 16 cm / 6.29 inch

Oh I love the ClipiTool line. I don't know why, but I am very strongly wanting all of those.

The Clipitool looks very interesting, particularly being Slipits. One thing that has always impressed me about Spyderco is their intention to embrace and include the blade restrictions in various markets worldwide rather than just shun them. On the flipside, the thing I frequently find offputting is the price - and if it had the Byrd eye rather than the spidiehole I'd have a little more eagerness about them  ;)

That Chaparral scalework looks very nice

Superb design.  I'm a bit concerned about its origin however (Taiwan)...  Same great quality we've come to expect  ???

I was at the Meet, and there will be quite a lot of beautiful & functional new knives coming from Spyderco.
My #1 favorite is without a doubt the new full size Martin Slysz framelock folder with full titanium handle and full flat CTS-XHP blade.
My #2 would probably be the Para2 with contoured carbon fiber grips.

Like every year we all got a goodiebag with the new brochures, a Brad Southard pin, a puzzle pen, and last but not least a Spyderco C154PBK Squeak.  :D

Spyderco has made and does make quite a few knives in Taiwan, including both current Chaparral series knives.  Why would you automatically make assumptions about the quality?

Made in Taiwan Spyderco's are currently the absolute best Spyderco has to offer: better than US and Japan production.

Some of these look rather interesting... looking forward to seeing what actually materialises, especially UK legal options :tu:

I wonder if Spyderco is a year or two away from producing a multi tool.

Don't the Spyderwrench and Byrdwrench already classify as such? ;)

If they were to tempt me with a multi tool it would have to be something like a Spirit or Charge.

If any of the multi blade slipjoints get made I'd be all over them.  Very pretty in my book.
