Guardian in the 80's. I also had the shoulder holster system for it.

Mine was a Gator, partially serrated lock blade that faithfully served with me in the USN. Gave it to my replacement.

Ye first gerber arrived! Really like the mp400, but it's a bit small for my shovel hands. Might need to try the mp600, also like the look of the blunt nosed version. And so it begins again :ahhh

I was given a Gerber Gator many, many years ago (when were they even released?) by an old friend of the family. I was nine or ten I believe so that would have been 92-ish. Does that seem right? Anyways, I still have it but I just never use a knife by itself often enough to warraant wearing it around.

I do however carry a multitool, and my black oxide MP400 compact sport has been with me since 2004.

I just received my first Gerber, a BO Diesel. Full disclosure here, I am a Leatherman guy and have resisted buying a Gerber for years. I have handled several, and I was never impressed. I decided to pull the trigger, however, when I saw I could get a good deal on a Gerber that had gotten good reviews. Anyway, the BO Diesel is aesthetically pleasing. I really like the tacti-cool look.

I noticed right away, though, that the pliers rattled like an old man's dentures when retracted. I thought that was a little odd after reading that tolerances of the recent incarnations of the Diesel were tighter than in the past. I figured the rattle would stop once the pliers were extended. I was wrong. There is a good 1/16 to 1/8 inch of side-to-side travel in the pliers when they are extended with plenty of rattle to go along. The pliers do not instill any confidence in me whatsoever. I would never trust them to handle any job that requires any torque.

welcome to the forum WINK.  Personally I don't have any worries about putting as much torque on Gerber's sliding pliers as I would on any other equivalent multitool pliers, Leatherman's included.  I wouldn't stand on them, hit them with a hammer, use an extending leaver etc, but what you will be able to apply with your own hand/arm?  No worries at all in my experience. :)

+1 My MP600 is my go-to heavy duty tool.  I've never doubted its ability.

My first Gerber was an original Guardian back in 1982. I bought it after Boot Camp and carried it until I lost it. Then I bought another one and carried that until it was stolen. Then I bought a third...I gave that one to a good friend. I've owned MANY more Gerbers over the years but loved the Guardian!

Thanks for the warm greeting! I'm glad to read a couple positive responses too. I'm still concerned, though, with how much play there is between the pliers and the body of the tool. Is that common?

The lateral movement in the pliers is normal, nothing to worry about I assure you.  Go use them with confidence. :)

My first Gerber was a boot/belt knife (I believe is called the Guardian) that I bought around 1980 (maybe 1979).  It has a polished blade, and comes with a clip-on sheath.  My second Gerber was a "Mk II" fighting knife similar to what was used in the Vietnam war.  Mine is all black, with a black leather holster.  The middle of the blade has "teeth," and the blade is slightly canted.  These knives (and some others) are stored in my garage, and I haven't seen them in some time.  I really got to get them out and remind myself what I have.

Mine was the mp700 Terminator 3 edition back in 2003. It was awesome and I used the absolute heck out of it and finally retired it to my car's glovebox in 2012 to be replace by a LM. I loved the spring action and all locking features, which I didn't even get with it's replacement, the Wingman. The rubber handle covers came off of course and I glued them back on a few times, but that "T3" stick-em is still going strong! It never even got a speck of rust.

Even though I've switched primarily to LM these days, and never owned another Gerber MT since, I still look fondly at their latest line of tools and am always very tempted to try out Gerber again someday.

First Gerber was a MP600. Sadly I traded it to a friend. I miss the serrated blade and one hand opening. Never liked the fact I had to open it to use the knives. That's why I went to Leatherman. Now that Gerber has the Flick series I'll most likely get one. I really like the Flick Fish.
