Your first Gerber?
on: March 07, 2013, 07:55:03 PM
Gerber are a company that have been around for a long time now and have had hundreds (thousands?) of products put out with their name on them.  So which was your first?  Knives, lights and MT's all acceptable.  Pics not mandatory but, as always, strongly encouraged. :D

Here's mine: a Gerber LRT.  A small knife with a blade a little under 2 1/2" long.  Very pocket friendly little thing, but the lock is also a bit fiddly.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

My first was a Gerber Crusial. I dont have it anymore because I sendt it in for warranty repair, and got a new one about 8months ago.

My first (and so far only) is my MP800.  I still think it's a great tool, but it's too bulky to carry compared to my ST200, or Swiss Tool.

My first Gerber was one of the tiny paraframe knives. I used it so much that the serrated part looks like it is a plain edge.

Thankfully I decided to give them another chance, and have since had several items I'm very happy with

I can't remember what my first Gerber was.... Maybe my Mk I?

My first Gerber multitool was an MP600 which I still have.

My first Gerber was a blunt-nose "Mr Pinchy" from the mid 90's, much the same as Top-Gear-24's.  It still resides in a vehicle glove-box, which is where it started life (it has outlasted 3 vehicles so far).

My first (and only) Gerber was an MP600 Pro Scout. Didn't really like it, though... So I traded it away.

I know my first Gerber was a knife, just not sure which one.   My first Gerber MT was my MP450.  I was hesitant to go through with the trade for it, seeing as how I once broke a Suspension while handling it in the store.  :o  I seem to have taken a little bit of a liking to Gerbers since then though....  ;)

My first Gerber was Magnum folding hunter if I remember correctly. The first MT was a BO BN Multi-Lock. I do not have either. Can not remeber what happened to the knife. The Multi-Lock was stolen.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

My first Gerber was a MK II back in the early 1970's. My first multi-tool was a Gerber Multi-plier when they first came out. So long ago I forget the year but it was a Father's Day gift from my wife. Maybe twenty years ago? tom. :)

My first Gerber is the Dime that I bought an hour ago.
Was buying some other items from Bunnings, a local hardware chain, and they had them for $19.99. Pretty good price for here, next cheapest I have been able to find is about $27 incl shipping off eBay.

Their quality seemed to have picked up in the last couple of years.  I am happy with them.  I just wish they would make better sheaths.

Yeah I'd agree with that 100%.  As to their quality, I've certainly gotten over any qualms about carrying a Gerber.  My regular EDC tools are an MP600 Pro Scout, my MP450, or my Balance.

My first Gerber multitool was the suspension. It is not as bad as some people say, but I hate the blades on it!

My first, I think, was the MP400 I got from Captain Spaulding some time back, and passed along. Not bad, just not for me.

I currently have a pair of Mini Suspensions, a Dime, and the Bear Grylls 'Strata'.

Overall, my impression of Gerber is that their stuff isn't as good as Victorinox and Leatherman, but mostly in fit and finish. Minus saws, they seem to be quite functional, and tend to have particularly good scissors.

Still, I have no Gerber. The only Gerber I almost got 20-25 years ago was the LMF knife (the original or No I). But for  some reason I decided to get only folders (recently I had the same internal dialog in front of a 10 euros Morakniv and stayed firm). Now I am even older for full tang stuff anyway.

My first Gerber was their 1st folder. Not sure of the # but is was referred to as the Gunstock because of it's checkered wood scales that were designed to be ambidextrous. The knife I got was originally owned by B.R.Hughes;former editor of Guns Magazine. A friend of mine who owned a cutlery store got it from him. Supposedly they are very collectible in Japan.Pic#1 shows that knife.
Pic#2 is a Gerber model 400 (along with the multitool)that I gave to my oldest boy on the first day he went hunting. He came and asked if I would loan him a knife in case he needed one.I gave it to him and warned him to clean it well if he used it as it was carbon steel.Must have been a good luck charm because less than 4 hours later he was headed home with an 8 point buck.Strangely enough he hasn't even SEEN another deer in all the years hence.
Pic#3 is a late 1950's set of Gerber hunters with the Armorhide handles;another infrequently seen set.
Last pic is a special edition Gerber MkII fighting knife.

My first Gerber was also Mr Pinchy. Bought in 92/93 choosed between a pst and pinchy and took the gerber because it looked bigger and a bit cooler. It has been in numerous countrys.Thought I lost it and found it again.Beeing in my workbag for 18 years. And man! What blisters I have got.I Actually edc:t almost everyday until christmas 2011 that I spent in the USA and bought a Wave and Wingman at the same time. Wich turned me into the  leatherman route and the hole mt-spree as well.
Mr Pinchy is now retired and I have taken the rust and gunk away. I have a Grappler on the way wich gonna be my first big size gerber in ....well... 20 years.
