Joining the ranks of the unemployed............
on: March 07, 2013, 08:50:56 PM
Well, just over a month ago I marked 10 years service with a "global aerospace company"... today I am being kicked to the kerb as superfluous to requirements. So much for loyalty. I guess that's the hazard of working for a "Project based" company who has basically one customer, the government... and with the current govt frantically cooking the books to produce a budget surplus in an election year pretty much all defense projects have been slashed or put on hold. no work - no job.
Well, at least I get a payout so I have a little while that I can keep ahead of the bills while I sample the delights of the 50+ employment market.

But, in the mean time I will have more time for little projects like this...

New Farmer into old scales.

Well if you look on the bright side, it sounds like you have time to become a full time blademaker then! :D  Well if that's an interest to you of course.

I'm hoping to turn this hobby into a proper job in the next few years and produce some cool slip joints to sell.  Modding for now, but 100% custom for the future.  And I want to gain entry into the knifemakers guild here.  Making stuff is more satisfying than my day job anyhow.  Also you cant be 'let go' from a job you created.  Now people can choose not to buy my stuff, but then its my own fault for not making cool stuff.  Ive always dreamed of not being accountable to 'the man'.  Maybe one day.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

I was only at my last job 2 years, and didn't get a contract extension due to current financial fubar state we're all in... so I've been off since Christmas. Hang in there, hopefully things will turn around for us quickly!
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Sorry to hear that. Had hoped Australia didn't have that 50+ employment issues too. Work here is horrible, and harder to find since I hit 50 last year.

Experience doesn't seem to matter around our area anymore, if one is bi-lingual with Spanish that is all you need to get a job.

Really sorry to hear that mate.  I was there last year and yes it is hard.  However I did get back into work as I am sure you will too.  In the mean time look forward to seeing more of your creations.

One benefit of the 50+ workers that is severely lacking with the younger generations (mine included) is the lack of dedication.  There is very little loyalty nowadays, very little work ethic and no dedication or pride in the work you are performing.

For those reasons I value the over 50 workers, although unfortunately I am not in much of a hiring position.  I did take on a temp in his late 20's last month and I have been impressed by him.  He's retired military (PTSD) and maybe that's why he's working out so well.  He's not a smart kid, but he's smart enough to know he's not a smart kid and he works like a dog to make up for it.  That is a heck of a lot better than the vast majority of kids I see in his age group that want to do as little as possible and get a paycheck.

You may only have 10-15 years of work left to you before retirement, but I'll bet you'll accomplish as much or more in that time as many people in my age group and under will in their entire careers...

Well he's only working one day a week, and he's only got this week left, but it breaks up his time before he goes back to school to be a diesel mechanic.  If the military had gotten his paperwork in order faster he'd already be in school, but for the sake of a week he had to wait until the next semester.

Crossing my fingers that you bump back into a good job quickly! People who do something in their extra time instead of just staring at the walls have a tendency of doing just that.
