Hi from down under
on: March 10, 2013, 08:54:54 AM
Hi - I'm a Dutchman living in Australia. Have had a number of multitools over the years, and my current go-to tool is an original skeletool (2009 vintage, I think), and has been for a couple of years of faithful, faultless service.

Am endlessly fascinated by multitools, and need something with a few more tools (stronger pliers, for starters), hence my joining.

Hi erratic, welcome to the forum.  As you probably know by now there are lots of choices out there, so you can afford to be a little fussy.  I always recommend to people that the think about what features are most important to them and take it from there.  Also make sure you look at all the manufactures, Leatherman, SOG, Gerber, Victorinox and one or two others, they all do some great products.

Tougher pliers than a Skele isn't that hard, most 4" tools will do that.  So you need to think what's next on your "wants" list; pocket or belt carry?  Screwdrivers?  Scissors? etc etc. :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Thanks Gareth. Scissors no - have a small selection of nice ones in the back of the 4wd for when I am out bush. But yes, screwdrivers are a must, and I'd really like something that can take standard screwdriver bits rather than the LM flat ones. Would give me a lot more options - torx, hex etc etc.

No belt carry would be that appropriate here, so weight isn't too much of a concern

Having browsed the forum a bit I'm getting the feel for the place. I suspect that when you say to get a wave OR a SOG, you really mean 'get both!' :)

Will check both those out. I've a couple of days off. Sounds like a perfect excuse to go windowshopping!

If your screwdrivering tends towards the heavy duty I suggest you also check out the Leatherman "Universal Tool Adapter" which will take any 1/4 bit and fits many (not all) MTs.  The bit drivers on LMs aren't super robust, and so are the weak link in the chain. More info here:

G'day & welcome mate  :D :D

I do like my Victorinox Spirit + ratchet driver kit . Really needs to stay in the sheath so pocket cary is a little tricky but not impossible

Mvyrmind - now that's an excellent idea, and I have all the parts already!

Multimat - with temptations like that one I can tell that my bank manager is going to rue the day I joined this forum!
