  • I'm an Adult?!?! When did that happen?
This is my 1000th post in these forums... I joined up here about 9 months ago to ask a question. I wanted to identify the old Wenger that had been my faithful companion for (then) nearly 40 years.

Since then I have become a regular member of the forums and a victim of the bunch of enablers who live here.
9 months ago I had 1 SAK, now it's more like 1 hundred.

After seeing some of the fantastic work being done in the modification of SAKs I decided to try my hand at it too. Bought a eBay lot of busted-ass leftovers from one of the regular sellers of hardware stolen from passengers by the TSA and had a ball learning about liners, bushings, backsprings, peening and all that black art that goes into modding these little red pocketknives.
Then someone introduced me to the Crack-SAK that is Alox... ow, my poor wallet.

Anyway, to make a long story short ("too late" they all cried) I have found this to be a very pleasant little corner of the interweb, populated by a far higher proportion of nice people than many of the interest group forums i have belonged to over the years.
The members here treat information and knowledge as something to be shared, not an object of power that makes them better than the others.
I'm amazed by the number of giveaways and "parts free to a good home" threads. I know none of this is "expected" of anyone, but people still do it.
I have learned a lot from this forum and now would like to do a small thing to say thanks.

Over the last week or so i have been working on a small project, For some time I have wanted to have a play with making some Damascus blades and bought a bar of carbon steel Damascus to experiment with.
As the project progressed it started to look like it would come out as a nice little knife. I decided to take a little more care with finish than my usual prototype builds and even tho there were a couple of hiccoughs along the way, they were overcome and I'm quite pleased with the end result.

See my second post here for a description of the knife and details on how you could make it yours...

  • I'm an Adult?!?! When did that happen?
The knife is made with a 2.5mm thick (at the tang) 1095/15N20 Damascus blade, it is shaped similarly to a 85mm Wenger SAK blade but slightly longer, in the end being a few mm shorter than a 91mm Vic' blade.
The Backspring was made from a Wenger scissors layer spring which has been cut down at each end to allow a slimmer handle shape. The liners and bolsters are made from brass and the scales are wood from an Apricot tree finished with linseed oil. The blade pivot pin is brass and the two backspring pins are nickel-silver. Everything made with hand tools, a bench sander being the most sophisticated piece of machinery involved. There is approximately 20 hours of work in this knife so even if there are only about $15 worth of materials the "making" has got to be worth quite a bit, even at minimum wage. :)

Okay, on with the business part of this deal.

In a blatant copycat of the recent giveaway by bruce909 we are going to play a little guessing game to decide who goes home with this knife.
Being a simple slipjoint with a non locking, nail nick opening blade shorter than a standard 91mm SAK I would hope this knife would not be any problem for anyone in any country, but if it would cause Customs or Police issues for you to receive it please let some other member have your guess.

I have piled a bunch of SAKs into a plastic container and you have to guess how many. Closest guess without going over the number wins.

Unfortunately life isn't always simple so we need a few more rules, most of them are the usual things and there is one or two variations or extras in this case.  so...

To enter...
1. You must be of legal age to own a knife where you live.
2. You must have 100 posts minimum in the forums.
3. You must not have won another giveaway in the last 6 months. (be fair)
4. One guess per member
5. I will post worldwide via Australia Post Air-Mail
6. Guesses close 6pm Australian Eastern Standard Time April 1st 2013

I have PM'd the Glorious Leader the number of SAK's and a link to a photo of them laid out before being piled into the container so there will be no chance of me fiddling the result.

and now....  the pictures.

There is ONE container. Photos of top and front views to aid in guesstimation of how many SAKs. There are 58mm, 84mm, 91mm and 93mm Vic's and 65mm and 85mm Wengers. Apart from that, work it out yourselves. :D

Usual format for guesses, copy the list and add your guess. Please be diligent in your copying, try not to drop anyone's name from the list.
I'll start it off for you..

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
