EDC a retired tool?
on: April 10, 2008, 09:34:02 PM
What are ya'lls thoughts on carrying a retired or discontinued tool? Save them as collector items or use the hell out of them? After all a tool is a tool..right? Or do you keep that pristine PST in a crystal case in the batcave with other royal treasues?

I am all up for using them and I frequently do.  Saying that though, my old PST which is riveted sees no use at all, so I guess it depends on how old it is.  My Supertool will still be in use for years to come though.  :)

Like Benner said depends on age or if it has sentimental value.  Until recently I was using my PST for everything but bought a Blast to rest the older one a little doesn't meen I am gonna put it up for good.  The tool is just to good to put away forever.  :multi:

I carry a KF4 a lot, and it's extremely used. (I also have a pristine one sitting in my toolbox at home. :P ) I carry a pulse fairly often, and a Charge Ti. I'd use either one of them, though I'd keep the abuse to a minimum. ;) Just by random coincidence, I happen to be carrying my old PST (my first MT) today, but I rarely do that.

I use them. If I damage it I figure I can have it repaired under warantee or replace it. I'm not going to retire a tool I like because it's discontinued.

I totally EDC retired tools. There are only a few collector multis and it's just not a hobby were the price really gets to investment grade levels. Couple that with the fact that one could spend a week or two searching eBay and have the opportunity to buy 99% of all multis ever made and I see no reason not to EDC the retired tools.

I figured if I ever broke an implement I'd just make it an awl anyways.

I regularly carry a Charge Ti and occasionally carry a PST.  I do have some though that don't get much of any use because they are "special" to me.

A tool isn't a tool untill it has battle scares on it,thats what makes them personal, three of my EDC's are retired,PST,PST II,and Super Tool, and I carry one of those three everyday.

Well to the dismay of several people here I carry all my tools retired or not. I actually used my Sidekick VERY heavily this week on a Coast to coast driving job. I really dont mind them getting battlescard. In fact I actually think saving and not using them is kinda foolish. They have the 20 year warrenty, so I am sure they have tons in stock.

So beat the crap out of them!! :ahhh

i was a little hesitant but that Ti wanted to be used. If you're gonna use something daily might as well use the best.

That is why I always get drawn back to the OG Supertool cause IMO it is the best in the whole ST range

ST is a beast, i kinda like the locks on the ST200 and the Pulse. Pulses must be getting rare these days as i hardly ever see them for sale. I see more Flairs and minis than Pulses.

If they would only just update the locks on the Pulse they would have a winner I think :gimme: It is very rare to see them on ebay so I am glad to have gotten them when they could be had for a good price :tu:

If it cannot be replaced easily then it stays in the house. It still gets used but only at home. Flair, KF4, etc fall into this category. If not it gets carried everywhere and used.

That seems like a very sensible policy to me

I felt that way about my modded tools too. Didn't like the thought of replacing it when it's made of parts from multiple tools.

Then I realized the point of having the modded tool was to get the exact tools I wanted for carry. Didn't make sense to leave it at home. Now I'm jut careful with it and don't lend it to anyone.

Almost all of mine are retired and they get carried almost everyday. The only tools I have that aren't are the Micra, ST300 and Rebar.

I have a Charge Ti in new condition but dont use it.  I wanted to use it but I am afraid if it gets damaged too bad that it won't be able to get replaced.  It may be able to get fixed depending on the damage if I sent it in for warranty work but I certainly don't think it would get replaced with another Ti if the damage it too much to fix.

I have no problem carrying and using retired models.  In fact, I carry a G1 Wave regularly, and would carry my G1 Supertool more if it were lighter, or if I sheath carried.  Although I'm in Obi's Supertool challenge next month, so I'll get used to it I hope.

I have no problem EDCing my precious possessions.

I carry most of the time original LM Sideclip, clipped on pants, at work, fiddling with it on a desk etc. While Sideclip is one of the most desirable classic LM tools fetching high $$ these days, I enjoy it and use it.
Stuff I don't use, I make sure I 'lose'.  ;)

Life is too short, enjoy the things you like now. After all they are all just things. You fall in and out of love with most of them, over time.
EDC and OCD. A wicked mix.

I also EDC retired tools, as I tend to prefer older models of the big 4 brands.

Quality is lacking in many of their modern offerings, for instance my two favorite SOGs are the Blacktip and PowerPlier, and they're the SOG MTs I carry most

My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

SAKs: Bantam, Executive, Ambassador, Minichamp, Classic Alox, Champion, Farmer, Explorer, Swisschamp, Golf Tool, Wenger Champ, EVO 52, Pocket Tool Chest
