I hear good stuff about Windmills but don't have one myself. What's your budget?

I'm prepared to pay about £30, had too many  £5-£10 ones that once you've refilled them never work properly again!!

I had a Windmill Trekker, and overall was very disappointed with it.  I say "had" because the thing crapped out on me, literally a week after the warranty expired.

That wasn't what I disliked about it though.  It's advertised as an "outdoors" and/or "survival" lighter, but I found its performance in outdoors situations to be abysmal.  It wouldn't light at elevation, no matter how much I tinkered with thinning the fuel flow, and the piezo mechanism was worthless in any kind of cold environment.  A couple winters ago my wife and I hiked to the top of Yosemite falls in early January, only about 8,000 ft. elevation, and the Trekker simply would not light at all.  I thought it was the cold, so put it in a pocket inside my jacket next to my side, but warming it up made absolutely no difference whatsoever; it still wouldn't light no matter how hard I tried, no matter what the fuel mix was, and so on.  If my wife hadn't had a Bic with her, we'd have been SOL for hot water/food.

I won't buy another Windmill again, and now I stick with plain old disposables; Djeeps are my favorite as I've found they last longer than Bics or Crickets and have a level adjustment the Bics lack, and which provides a greater range than the one on the Crickets.

Eventually I'll get an IMCO or something similar.
The first Noble Truth: life is suffering.  Only by accepting that fact can we transcend it.

I've got a Zippo with a Z-Plus insert. Holds a decent amount of fuel - very easy to carry. Never smoked in my life, but it's a useful lighter.

I have the Z-Plus in my Steelers Camo Zippo as my backup. I would recommend Xikar as they have an excellent lifetime warranty. I own several and my EDC lighter is the Xikar Tech triple flame. It holds plenty of fluid and comes in single, double and triple flames.

-edit Here's the Tech triple on the right

Oh that Xikar looks cool!  I dont think I need a triple, but I see a clear single flame in my future.

I have zippo's & imco's, and tried a few cheapy lighters, I like the xikar, a single flame is sufficient, The main thing is that I can fill it up, throw it in my b/pack  and leave it there knowing when I do need it, it'll work, I have looked at the wenger clava. but had no real advice on one,

Grumps just get a few cheepo lighters for your rucksack. elevation and temp. aren't really an issue on our tropical Island paradise.
That said a good jet flame is fun to play with and they do light fires very well, i keep telling you you NEED a peanut lighter or two several and put them on your keys and use 'em as zipper-pulls ! the fuel doesn't evapourate like 'zippos' so they are great backups  ;)
and as a 'filthy smoker' you can use the expencive lighters as EDC

So generally the peanuts lighters dont leak?  I read reports they'd leak and dry up then you got no lighter when you need it.

BUT due to thier size they don't last long in 'flame mode'

I thought I'd replied to this thread already   obviously not  :-\

Anyhoooo .... I've never owned a jetflame lighter that's worked properly by the time its reached its third filling. I don't know why, but they just don't seem to burn like they do when they've new. I have a few zippos ... don't use them often though. I have a couple of IMCOs which see a lot more use than the zippos, but they're still not my "regular" lighter.

For me you just can't beat a Clipper lighter (regular or mini) as they hold fuel longer than the others, they're reliable and dead easy to fill and change the flints, and of course they're cheap. I do like using my IMCOs, but I'll always keep going back to my Clippers for cheap, simple, hassle free reliability. Also, if you drop a Clipper lighter whilst using it, the flame goes out - not so with a petrol lighter!

I don't climb mountains so altitude isn't a problem - and even in the strongest winds, I can still always find a way of lighting a cigarette with a Clipper  :tu:

Have you had a look at the Star butane inserts? They don't fit Zippo cases, but the Star lighters are cheap as chips.

Otherwise,looking cool:Zippo

Bushcraft/SHTF:IMCOS

Anything that needs control or precision? My Ronson Pebble!
