Multitool.org Charter Membership
on: March 29, 2013, 11:12:48 AM
The Multitool.org Charter Membership was designed to allow members the opportunity to support this site and get a few extra perks as well.  So far, it's been quite a success, and I'd like to thank everyone who has taken part.

For those who are considering it, or are at least curious, here is what's involved.

Annual membership is $30.00 US, and the easiest way is to click on Profile at the top of your screen then Actions and Paid Subscriptions.  From there click the Order button and follow the instructions.  This price is good worldwide, so anyone outside of the US need not add any extra.  Members will receive a membership package that includes a Multitool.org branded lapel pin and screwdriver set.  This is our way of saying Thank You for joining up and supporting the site.  In addition, Charter Members will also get advance notice of any projects that we are doing, including hats, shirts, special run tools or other merchandise, as well as special pricing on them.  It's not hard to imagine any Charter Member not making their $30 membership fee back in savings over the course of a year!

Charter Members will also be given access to a special forum for information on anything that pertains to them.

If you have any questions about joining or payment methods other than Paypal, or anything at all really, please feel free to contact me at grant.lamontagne@gmail.com (or send me a PM!) and I will try to answer them in a timely fashion.

Its a shame that the charter initiation with lard is no longer available.

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, Charter Membership packages are suspended until further notice.  I'm sorry to have to do this, but I don't have much choice right now.

If anyone wants a refund on Charter Member payments please send me a PM.

I'm finally in. I've been here for four years (mostly lurking — 0.155 posts per day as I write this!) but always coming and going as my hobbies evolved. Now, the big spending has run its course, and between this - the flashlights - the knives - the random EDC gear... multi-tools (and this forum with all its interesting, smart, generous people) are where I keep coming back to. I've been posting a lot more here, trying to appreciate what I've got instead of pining after the latest whatever that I can no longer afford. After sucking up your bandwidth for four years (and using an ad blocker the whole time — I know, :twak:), I felt it was time to start giving back more. MTO has been a place for me to learn, to feel a part of something bigger, to escape from the nonsense of normal working life. So thanks to Grant and everyone else for the time and money they pour into MTO, I hope I can finally make it up to you a little.

That ended up kinda sappy. I'm just glad to be in the cool people club now.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

Glad to have you aboard!

I'll refrain from makomg derogatory comments about ad blocker use, but I will take the opportunity to explain my position on it.

I don't want member money.  I want each of you to use your hard earned money to buy toys, take your families out, fix your cars, whatever you want to do with it.  You earned it, go and have fun with it.

Advertisers have money, that's corporate money and they'll never miss it.  But, I don't want to have to cover the forum with ads, because even in find that annoying.  It's been a delicate balancing act between covering site costs and cluttering the place up.

When ad blockers are used heavily it means the site costs have to come from either more ads or somewhere else.  Putting in more ads means more people get annoyed and start using ad blockers etc, so that's not a solution and we end up having to do something like paid memberships, donation draws etc.  Either that or start cutting out things like fancy extra software bits, start purging photos from old posts to save server space or (gasp) not celebrate things like the site anniversary with literally hundreds of dollars in shipping alone.

I'm not pointing the finger at you, or anyone else that uses ad blocker software- heck, most sites nowadays make it an absolute necessity, but if you (general you, not anyone specific!) can, please consider turning it off for MTO, because it does make a huge difference here, and I really don't want more ads!

Thanks for explaining more about what's going on behind the scenes.

For me its -google, find a forum, lurking, join and enjoy.

But as you said. Someone must pay for something somewhere!!

So yes. I totally agree with that.

I use ad blocker software, but set it to ignore this site. I don't find the ads here annoying, and I don't want to potentially block even the slightest bit of income for the site.

I guess I didn't realize how important the advertising revenue was for operations. I've been using ad and script blocking for a long time, for security and privacy reasons, but it's getting turned off now for MTO. And with about four ads on the page anyway, it really is a minor thing to deal with. Grant, I appreciate your openness, because I had never really thought to that depth about what it takes to keep the lights on. :salute:

Not blocking the ads is all I ask for.

I hate those sites where you have to be a paid member or your opinion is worthless and I don't believe in buying status.
