Another story from the sea
on: April 13, 2008, 08:41:26 PM
Not sure I've shown these pics before  But last year I found this washed up on the beach after a storm . There are hundreds of wrecks off our coast and I feel quite lucky to have found this though . Its a ships block or pulley .

It wasnt too bad , just kept chipping away .I havnt cleaned it up any further then the last pic as I would imagine it may start to fall to bits . Its got to be at least 200 years old

Awesome find- When you handle that kind of thing you feel a connection with the people who made and used it (romantic I know, but I get that feeling when I handle American Indian relics). I envy your living near the sea. I'm mountain-locked and every time I get to the sea, it's like that scene in "Lord of the Rings" where Legolas glimpses the ocean and gets wanderlust!

Come to think of it, I've never even seen the sea. I've flown over it a couple times but that's it. I need to do that one of these days.

I see it all the time- imagine a really big lake that smells funny and has fish that will eat you.

Wow, I would love to find something like that.
What other things have you found from ships on the shore?

When you do go see the ocean, be prepared for a little shock.
I had a good friend from Kansas come visit me years ago in college, and first she had something between claustrophobia and agoraphobia from the mountains. Then, when we went to see the Pacific, she positively freaked out and acted like a scared little girl. After a while, she calmed down and couldn't believe how big it was; really all you can see is 20 miles out, just like the Great Lakes, but it can be surprising. She finally went in the water, but kept having this feeling like it was going to suck her out "to Hawaii."
This all from a normal, well adjusted (and very attractive) woman. She'd actually seen the Atlantic when we flew over it a couple years before, and touched the English Channel, but it just isn't the same as the Mighty Pacific.

Oh, and cool find! In Oregon we recently had a couple shipwrecks wash out of the sand recently on the coast, famous ones from the early days of the NW.

Coming from a tiny country, it's hard to imagine never seeing the sea.

In my village the main access to the beach is over a steep concrete ramp . The lifeboat shed is at the top on the right . Its great in the summer when you see kids on holiday running up to the top and seeing the sea for the first time .
