Suspension plier assembly question

I don't know the history of MT development to answer this question, and I'm hoping someone here will know.

The plier head on the Suspension uses a metal bracket as the backstop for the pliers. It's held in place at the handle pivot, and with two additional screws. There are now a jillion tools to use this design, which seems to be an inexpensive solution to allowing tools with outside access.

Here's the question: Is the Suspension the first tool to use that plier backstop design?

It's a bit similar, except it uses torx screws to secure it, instead of the metal of the scales wrapped around it, the way the Spirit works. Should I be asking when the Spirit came out?

EDIT: a look on the SAKWiki says the Spirit came out in 2004, but I THINK the design might have been on on the Swisstool as far back as '97/98. Still looking for when the Suspension was released.

In further searching, it seems this design was inherited from the Gerber Legend.

Can anyone confirm?

I think we might need Bob's input on this one.

I think the Swisstool inherited the design from the Bear Jaws it was based on.
