Multitool with spanners - can anybody recommend one
on: April 21, 2013, 03:08:54 PM
Bascially as the title says.

I'm  looking for an MT with pliers, spanners, philips and flat head. I'm guessing something exists, but I can't seem to find it.

The nearest thing seems to be the MT's designed for cyclists, but they all seem to be big and bulky.

Has anyone seen anything unusual out there?
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

The MUT comes with a wrench, was that the sort of thing you were after, or something more like Wenger's wrench in a plier based MT form?

There is of course the option of just getting a 4" or 6" wrench to go with it. You can hold one end of a nut and bolt with that and the other with the MT. I've got a little 6" that cost me something like £2.50, opens to 21mm and works really well. 4" wrenches seems to open to about 13mm.

Pliers, wrench, and screwdrivers all in one? There aren't a lot of those. The Spyderench comes to mind, as does that Cattlemans Cutlery/Jeep tool.

There's also that plier-wrench multitool made in China. Quality isn't the best, but it is functional:

When you say spanners, would the flat wrench on the Wengers be enough?

Spanner? do you mean a wrench like an open ended wrench or a wrench like this?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Spanner_wrenches_various_kinds_from_Colvin_and_Stanley_1910_p64.png

I use MTB-8 (i think) which is a bulky bike tool but I like it. I wish i could find something less bulky though!

(Image removed from quote.)

Am I right in assuming the plier head folds into the body - so basically it looks like an adjustable wrench?
Where are these available from? Ebay??

So that would be a nutcracker then  :D

I don't want 'em cracked - just twisted will suffice.

The adjustable wrench niche has not been filled with a quality product that can go from 0: to 3/4" yet. MANY (self included) of us wished there were alternatives, with Leatherman quality tool assortment on-board too. Sadly no company has really developed a solution.

There is the CRKT Guppy, but that's only 1/2" maximum. Have been temped to acquire one. $40, not much on the tool, and opens to only 1/2".

CRKT Lil Guppy, 10mm maximum, so covers up to 3/8", yet most common tasks are between 1/4" to 9/16", and PC techs/light electrical (including batteries) use 3/32" to 5/16".

Closest found was this Supratentorial Tiny Wrench

And another option was the Wrex. Leatherman owns PTX now. Had inquired as if there was going to be any development on this tool, since they acquired PocketToolX, and perhaps a stainless steel & aluminum model. No one knows if there are any plans.

Had also contemplated finding an alloy crescent wrench, then retrofit it into the end of a Leatherman Skeletool, but not found a suitable alloy wrench of the correct size.
  (Cannot find the graphical idea)

Did come up with this very rough idea a while back....

similar tools aren't to hard to find . Looks like a lot of multitools made for bikes.

I gave up looking for a similar tool to what I think your after.

I need open ended wrenches.

I now carry a 4inch crescent. Its a
my multitools best friend.

The versi wrench might be my favorite but no pliers. The ratcheting wrench works great

First question is - What size spanners are you expecting to need usually?
Will a light duty Plier suffice?

I could imagine a Plier based MT and a small adjustable wrench are a nice Combo.
Or a bike tool with Spanners and Screwdrivers and maybe a Skeletool?

Different combos come to mind depending on the intended use.
I can not remember a single tool in decent quality including plier and spanners/wrenches.

First off - thanks to all for your imput.

Basically I'm after what obviously doesn't actually exist, but damn well ought too!!

How hard would it be to build a blunt nosed plier based MT, with 1/4" bit adapter and 3 open ended wrenches (spanners to us in the UK) say, 8/10/13mm plus 1/4" socket adapter.

Hell, that would be useful!!!

I would buy that tomorrow if it was built like a SOG, Surge or Swisstool.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Sounds like a good competition, mod a spanner into a multitool, "best" one gets the prize!

Pliers slip and mar the corners of the nuts & bolts. Do that too often or slip once or twice and you're ruining the but and/or bolt. Spanner takes care of that and a lot less likely to slip out or mar the corners like pliers or the Crunch does.

I've got two versions of that old Jeep tool, and they work just fine.

Can't complain, for less than $15, both models perform as intended.

I just hate the non--standard bit size they carry. Darn Chinese  :twak:

Another option is to go with a plier type tool and keep a flat wrench with it. I have carried an LM Croc or PW2 in the same sheath with my ST300 for a couple yrs now and don't notice it till I need it. The LM Parana is a good alternative to Croc as they are more common and have more features.

If you have a tool with a 1/4 bit driver you could add a GatorGrip socket w drill adapter. I keep this combo in my bag with a 1/4in ratcheting box wrench. As a set they give me a 'full" socket set in something small enough to store in an old MP600 sheath; although I currently keep them in a slightly larger sheath with a few other toys.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi
