Computer enthusiasts- I need help
on: May 11, 2013, 04:24:30 AM
I'm trying to upgrade my computer's RAM from DDR3 2 gig 1066 mhz to 4 gig 1333 mhz. Is my Lenovo's M series desktop compatible with a generic and higher speed memory card? Thanks

I have no manuals about this computer and besides, generic cards are readily available and cheap here.

I would start with a Google search of your computer's make and  model number and see if it can handle the higher speed DDR3 memory.

In general faster ram should work, as long as it's DDR3 as well.

finding out your motherboard model (it should be silkscreened on the board somewhere) or giving us the exact model of your PC should allow you/us to find out all the info of your board.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

The speed of the ram is no issue at all. If it's faster than the clock speed of the motherboard, it'll simply run under clocked.

I just didn't want Teofilo to pay more for faster memory if it wasn't going to run at full speed.  ;)

Thanks for the info  breezy12, Whoey and mvyrmnd! :salute:  I`ve decided to bring the whole CPU  to the  computer shop instead of just bringing the memcard. Thanks again guys!

On all my supplier pricelists, ddr3 is the same price no matter the speed. If people are charging more for a higher clock, they're ripping you off.

Sent from my Galaxy Tab II. Please excuse typos because the kaybkard on this thing is terrible!

In my experience, faster rated ram is usually cheaper as it's more plentiful and current.

When I upgraded from the 3Gb I had in my machine to 8Gb, I got the faster ram as it was significantly cheaper than the max spec of my motherboard.

I was also just recently looking for some DDR2 sodimms for my brother in law's laptop, as he has 2x 512Mb installed, and we were looking to max it out to 2x 2GB... the system spec is for DDR2-800, and yet DDR2-1066 is cheaper... and as pointed out, it will just run at the board spec'd 800.

The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I guess this shows how long it's been since the last time I built/upgraded my computer.

Thanks for the info, guys!  :salute:

Both of these sites have a few handy tools to help you figure out what memory will fit in your 'puter.

http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/system_specific

Or

http://www.crucial.com/

Select the manufacturer / model of your machine and it will tell you everything that is compatible.
