eBay USA
on: May 06, 2013, 11:35:09 PM
I've been trying to buy a PST on eBay USA  but with no success. Even with Buy it Now. eBay policy stops my transaction. Has anyone had more success than I've had?

The daft thing about eBay is that it sees I been looking and keeps sending me emails notifying me of the PST's on offer!

There's no easy get round I'm afraid - been this way for a while now much to our collective chagrin.

I would think so baja. Ya'll in the UK could also find a US mule to do your buying. Only problem is UK customs. Is it as bad as Oz customs?

Assuming you have shipping covered, you can register a new ebay account using an US address, then you can bid on stuff that UK ebay won't let you buy, or seller who limit US bidder only.

These knife laws are just crazy. Here you can't have OHO but locking blades are okay... But in the UK it's the other way around?!?!?.

Possibly the evilest knife I own comes from a kitchen shop. A ceramic bladed paring knife. Put that in a plastic or stitched leather sheath inside the back of your collar and it would be undetectable.

A no.10 Opinel would fly through customs here. But I stand a fair chance of losing the Leatherman StyleCS I just bought because the blade could be opened with one hand. I know which I'd rather have in a knife fight...

I believe most ceramic knives are manufactured with some kind of metal particles in the core so they do show up on x-rays etc. No doubt there are MANY exceptions to that rule though!

As for our laws, yep silly. Not realistic, but a briefly considered knee-jerk reaction to certain public beliefs that anyone carrying a knife wants to stab you. Anyway... ebay.... even dumber :D

I don't think ebay checks if you actually live there. No need to borrow anyone's address, just find an apartment complex and use that.

Sorry to say, that either way that is illegal. Identity theft is running rampant, even if you use your real name, a fake address is also considered id theft. Best thing to do is find a US person that will buy with their account and then forward to you. I have no idea about that   :twak: :D
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I agree that the best thing to do is find someone in the US who will act as a go between.  There are lots of folks here that do it regularly.

While technically listing a different address is fraud, and is illegal, I sincerely doubt that anyone would really chase it down and try to press charges against anyone doing it, unless a larger crime (like ripping people off by the thousands) was committed.  It simply isn't worth the paperwork to try and charge someone with lying on the internet.

It was Watchdog (Consumer protection show on BBC UK that tackles rip-off insurance/builders etc) that got that law changed, I remember the episode because at the time I was thinking how ridiculous it was for them to go after Ebay so hysterically when:

A) Most knife crime is carried out by kitchen knives bought from supermarkets or stolen from the parents cutlery drawer.

B) No mention of any others of the thousands of websites selling this stuff not to mention no questions asked market stalls in every town in the country, at least on Ebay you need a bank account, credit card, Paypal account etc all keeping a record of you as the knives owner, how many people who commit knife crimes have those?

At the end of the episode Ebay management caved and stopped selling knives on Ebay UK and Ebay Ireland, no idea why us in Ireland got dragged in when Ebay France and Germany and everywhere else are still selling...

Ebay UK do not sell knives by choice, it is not a legal thing.  Just like they do not sell hardcore pornography, again choice not forced by law...thanks Anne Robinson ::)

An alternative is to email the seller of the PST.  A lot of 'buy it nows' are small businesses.  They will be more than happy to complete a transaction without giving ebay a slice of their pie.

Just be sure to have them mark the value of the item as £16 or less to avoid being stung by customs and excise.

I've tried a couple of times to get sellers to contact me with a view to "buy it now' with little success. You either have to go through eBay messages or invite the seller to contact you through your email address. This isn't quite as easy as it sounds. Usually you cant find a sellers direct emaiI and eBay will not let you send a message with an email address in it so I tried a few subtle changes like replacing the @ with at and omitted the .com end. I'm hoping I've sourced a PST locally otherwise I'll keep trying the good old US of A with the hope of a response.

The way I have done it in the past is to message them through ebay messenger and tell them my email address in this format:

myemail
@
gmail.com

If they can not fiigure that out, I do not want to hammer out terms with them.

Some just do not want to sell outside ebay which is fair enough.  I have had an ebay account for the past 10 years and I have 250+ 100% positive feedback so that probably helps as well.
