on: April 15, 2008, 12:54:28 AM
I am planning to buy a Fenix L2D and when I searched DX I found out there are 2 versions. The L2D CE Q5 Cree at 66 USD and L2D CE Cree at 62 USD.  Does anybody knows what is the difference beween the two? Thank you.

Eddie, Whichdawg is right the Cree Q5 is the better bin. If you can't find what your looking for try Fenixstore.com. Here is the L2D Q5https://www.fenix-store.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_65&products_id=362. I have used them many times and have no problems. They have free worldwide shipping which should be good for you.

WD and Prime,

I have another question.

If for example I want to order from one particular vendor in the list, shall i just click the link and be automatically entitled to the discount specified on the right side of the vendor's name on the list?

Sorry, this is my first attempt to order online.

Eddie

I don't know how it works for CPF members, but most of the time there's a coupon code that you fill in during the checkout process that adjusts the price for you.

Fenix-Store is, without a doubt, my favorite Fenix supplier in the US.

Many don't realize it, but Fenix-Store has extended the Fenix warranty to lifetime for any Fenix product purchased from their store.  They are the only supplier (AFAIK) that does this.  I have quoted the warranty below.

In my experience, their customer service is second to none.

Quote
NO QUESTIONS ASKED LIFETIME WARRANTY

We have a new policy for all Fenix brand products. We are so
confident in these flashlights that we are now upgrading all Fenix
lights purchased past, present and future to an unconditional
lifetime warranty.

We will repair or replace any Fenix lights purchased from
www.Fenix-Store.com. Simply go through our "contact us"
link to initiate the RMA process. Your light will be return fully
functional. The exterior finish is not covered as this is cosmetic
and does not affect the function. If your model is discontinued,
we may issue you store credit or offer you a newer model of
equal or greater value. We reserve the right to issue a
refund in lieu of a replacement.

The only requirements are:
1) A Fenix brand product purchased from www.Fenix-Store.com
2) You must supply proof of purchase. An order number
that matches your contact information is sufficient.
3) You must got through the standard RMA process where we
will try to diagnose your problem prior to sending it in.

I have used both the cree and Q5, the difference is the lumens at the turbo mode the cree will produce 120 lumens and the Q5 will produce 180 lumens. Only drawback is that at turbo mode you will use up your battery faster with the Q5, but at other modes battery life will be the same. I have opted for the Q5 been using it for about 3 months now Very pleased with it, and it gives you the highest quality for the price IMOHO.

Thank you and welcome to the forum Duckman. BTW, what type of battery are you using with your L2D Q5?

Still using disposable energizer batteries will switch to rechargable soon. Have you seen the fenix TK 10? fenixlight is sure giving surefire the run for their money.

Yup, i've seen the pics and the features of TK10 at Fenix Store. Wow, 220 lumens on turbo mode but the CR123 battery is quite expensive.

I agree with you about the battery issue, but its sure is an alternative for no lethal deterent imagine blinding a potential attacker with 220 lumen  :D

The Q5 will not be less efficient in turbo mode in every case.  The efficiency of the LED depends on the forward voltage (Vf) of that particular LED.  The P4 and Q5 flux bins are spec'd with the same Vf ranges, and therefore it is possible to have a low Vf Q5 bin cree that is more efficient and brighter at a given current than a high Vf bin P4 Cree.  Typically the Q5 will have a higher Vf, but it's not a sure thing.

IMO, the difference in efficiency between the two is going to be negligible compared to the difference in output.
