Kukri recommendation?
on: May 14, 2013, 04:03:52 AM
Hi, ive been wanting a kukri for a long time, love how thick they are and the blade angle can make it usefull as a knife or machete when out in the wild.

Now i tried locally but any piece of junk with at least a resemblance to a kukri shape is extremely expensive, this of course because kids think a kukri is cool, even if they wont use it once in their entire life

So ive been thinking to buy one overseas and i would like to know if anyone can point me in a good direction. Of course the problem overseas is that i can not hold the knife nor see the blade beyond pictures so thats were i need help, besides i dont really know much about them and what to look for regarding steel and hardness.

Im looking at a medium sized blade, like 10-11 inches. And i want one to use it, so i prefer hardness to beauty. Of course the lowest the price the better so i wont be afraid to scratch it.

I checked this one out but i dont know if that nepal made is just marketing or truth:

So if you could share any suggestions on were to look or what to look to ensure a nice purchase, i would be most thankfull and promise to dedicate the first tree branch i hack to you  :tu:

Thanks.

All the Cold Steel ones are very good users, and my Carbon V one is indestructible :)

The best authentic ones are IMO made by Tora Kukris. They really are beautiful knives to use, and the quality is amazing too :)

Tora was the name that came to my mind as well.  I have only heard good things about them. :tu:

The cold steel kukri is bloody excellent for the money.
The Leatherman crunch.  One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass consumption. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I would also highly recommend Tora Blades, especially if you're really going to use it.

This is my own Tora Camping Kukri when it was still brand new:

I don't have a khukri. My knife in that role is my Chris Caine Survival Tool (shown at the top of this pic)

It's a superb tool, and has served me well in the 12 months or so that I've owned it. I think the fluorolon coating is excellent and has held up well to some heavy work at times. It is an expensive option though, and a khukri would probably be a better option is price is a factor

Thanks for the suggestions. The cold steel ones vary greatly in price, they do look nice but i think ill try to get a more traditional looking kukri.

50ft trad Thanks for sharing your survival tool, looks like a modernized kukri. I bet that bahco folding saw is great, if its one of the old ones even better.

Unfortunately the tora blades page, lists all of their kukris as out of stock, ill try to mail them to see when they will get more. Also kwakster i cant see your model on their store and there are some that appear on the side of the page that dont appear on the store. I guess they need to update it properly?

The himalayan imports look really interesting, most of their models are big but i saw a very nice one with a 12 inches blade, they all seem really nice and some let you choose handle which is great when you plan to use it.

Really enjoyed all the history surrounding the blade they have on those two pages  :tu:

Thanks a lot, more suggestions welcome, in the meantime ill keep working because that shiny kukri wont pay by itself.  :D

Well that came out very nice  :tu: I would really like and old kukri like that, did you spot them on ebay or is there some place else to watch?

Also when dealing with old kukris is there anything one could check to see if they are the real thing? handle material, sheath, engravings on the blade, something else?

Thanks.
