Your most used individual tool
on: June 10, 2013, 12:01:23 AM
We carry multitools with a big number of implements, so one has to ask which individual tool do oyu use most often? Is it the blade, the file or the nail clipper?

Phillips driver, followed by scissors. I don't use full sized MT's in my day to day life, but usually have a keychain-sized SAK with me.

Probably close to a tie for me with the knife and scissors.  Screwdrivers, file and pliers occasionally.  Saw rarely.

Blade and scissors for me. That's why I quit carrying a Leatherman and switched to a SAK.

Pliers.  I don't use the locking pliers function of my Crunches as frequently as the normal plier function, but when I do it is because I really need locking pliers.

I would have to say blade, scissors, drivers, then pliers.  At work (machinist) I actually use my file quite a bit, and pliers for removing stringers from parts.

If i have to choose only one it would be the wenger can opener, i use it to open all kind of packages, open bottles, break very tight zip ties, peel off duct tape or isolating tape, as a hook to pull things like strap or rope, you can even cut thick nylon rope with a few attempts, it comes in handy more than i expected.  :tu:

I actually find myself mostly using the Vic "plus" bit driver more than anything, but actually ON the multi, then the most used is the scissors. By a long shot. Followed by the knife, then probably a tie between the Phillips and the pliers. After that it's probably the awl believe it or not. I drill a lot of holes with it.

The Pliers are the main use out of my MT's. Wire cutters are second. Drivers are third on the list. I'll use my 11 in 1 first if its on me for convenience.

On an average day at home it would probably be a wash, I use pliers, flat and phillips drivers and main blade fairly often.  If I had to pick one that I used more than anything else it would probably be the main blade, or the small blade if it's a SAK.

I'll give an honorable mention to the pry bar on the Gerber Freehand.  When I first looked at that I thought "WTF was Gerber thinking?".  But I have to admit I've used it fairly often, it's usually the heavy MT I'll put on my belt when tackling jobs around the house, and that pry bar is the reason why.  From opening paint cans to prying concrete blocks up form the ground, I just love the thing.  Too bad it's got the worst small drivers on any tool I've ever owned.

At work there's no question, it's going to the the phillips and it has to be one sufficiently long like the one on the Cybertool, Fit or the Charge with an extension.  A distant second would be scissors to cut plastic wire ties.  Or if it's the Fit, it might be the flashlight.  I use a flashlight more at work than anything else.

I wasn't much help, was I?

This would be a fairly interesting statistic. Although I should also put down my order of uses

Phillips
Can opener
Pliers
File
Awl
Gutting blade (although not for it's intended purpose)

Hmm, good question  for a normal day I would have to say first up the blade, then Philips & regular, scissors, nail file, and lastly saw. While at work the LM skeletool came in great since I had all the extra bits.. So I put in my EDC pack the skeletool and style, great combo.. JR

What do you use the guthook for?
Cutting twine on haybales, opening boxes and packaging when I don't want to accidentally cut the contents, and trimming off wire cable sheathing.

Toothpick, closely followed by scissors.
But I am an outlier. I use the toothpick after almost every time I eat something, and I am always using the scissors for nails and other precise cutting jobs.
Is it just me, but I vastly prefer Vic scissors to any other for anything precise?

Usually it is the scissors, then a blade.
But there are  times that I need to fix something, then the drivers and file are  of  major importance.
I made a poll some months ago, in order to decide about a lighter SAK than my XLT. I  decided to go for a Mountaineer (with scissors and metal file) but I still carry my XLT everyday, because of all these nice to haves. After all the SAK is a toy and one should use the toys that amuse him the most.
From my Surge I  use the pliers and drivers. I rarely use the scissors and blades and almost never the awl, large driver and can opener, because the SAK's are far better.
I almost never use specialized tools, because I always shearch for opportunities  to  use my SAK and MT  at hand. I used mostly allen keys, and that before I got the extra bits for my XLT and the bit kits for my Surge.

Not just you. Victorinox scissors are the best I have ever used in a pocket tool.

I'll second the Philips followed by the knife, then the flat screwdriver.

I think I've ever legitimately used the pliers once on my Leatherman ST since getting it in March.

It makes you wonder if the Philips should be the "main" tool, instead of the pliers, judging from the responses. :)

I remember getting a SAK when I was a kid... and always cursing the fact that my tool didn't have a PHS.

Most used is probably scissors with main blade a close second.

Probably explains why most in my rotation have scissors.

My primary MT is a modified Wave.

Knife
Pliers, flat and Phillips drivers including my long reach thin slotted screwdriver (Fuse ground down a bit)

Tin opener (for scraping, poking etc)

Tum te tum...

Small glasses screwdriver. I used it today to fish a really small nut out of a hole. I think that's one of the first times I've used it. If it was the same thickness as the other handle tools it would have been replaced by now.

And the thing I miss the most is an awl.
