Same thing they did with their internet businesses.  (Go.com).

My younger brother was working for Disney, running some of the business aspects when it became clear to him that Disney had to decide to invest a TON or shut it all down.  They shut it down.  Back then, Disney was a very inbred management family.

Not the movies, but so far Lucasarts (the games branch) with 2 games mid production and the Clone Wars cartoon have been axed.

I really hope they have some good reasons for this.

I knew about Lucasarts being the makers of the games. I was not aware that they were the makers of the Clone Wars cartoon. That sucks. Clone Wars was actually a pretty good show.

I got word from a friend that Sony axed a bunch of folks from their game production line. It's a bad time to be in the game industry.

Makes me think they bought the franchise just to stop anyone else from having it.

I don't believe it was part of Lucasarts products, I was just mentioning that it has also been axed.

Buy a franchise to axe the products in production...  :facepalm:

Unless you work in mobile freebie games...

Those guys are basically programmers, not the artists that populated the gaming console industry.

I'm sad that they are being shut down, but I never really looked forward to the new starwars planned.

Lucasarts is not Lucasfilm

Lucasarts = video games

Lucasfilm = movies

Sequels are still very much being made. I doubt even Disney would want to shut down that cash cow...

I agree it's kind of a stupid move, but I'm sure they have their bean-counting reasons...   :facepalm:

Too bad about Clone Wars too.  Although, my understanding was that the current Season Five was to be the last, anyway, and will end the series with events leading right up to the opening scenes of Episode III.

Looks like there are 108 eps of Clone Wars, which reaches the magic number people are looking for to syndicate the show.

It'd only be a few more to fill out all of Season 5. I assume they'll finish the season. If not, that's 2 episodes short. Meh.

  • Don't mistake lack of talent for genius.
Things have been going downhill for Lucas anyway after releasing the classic games "Maniac Mansion" and "Zak McKracken" for Commodore 64 in the 80'ies.. Disney just knows they can't possible top that.. ;)

It's funny when you think about it... kind of full circle.  Lucas actually started Pixar, but thanks to a divorce he sold it to Steve Jobs who helped turn it into the giant movie making company which was eventually sold to Disney.  Pixar actually ended up taking over Disney's animation department since Disney's animated movies had been flops while Pixar's had been huge hits.  I guess Mickey didn't want to see something else with a following take over, so they had to be shut down.  After all, you always shut down a coup by killing the principles loudly and publicly before they gain momentum.   ::)

I gave up on Disney years ago, before they bought the Muppets, Pixar or Lucasfilm.  I grew up watching the Disney movies and cartoons- every Sunday night during or after supper we'd watch Daniel Boone, Swamp Fox or Donald Duck having a snowball fight with Huey, Dewey and Louie, and that was the best family time ever.  I still love the old shows, but they aren't on anymore.  I think the first indication that something was wrong in the Magic Kingdom (at least in my mind) was when they tried to make a family friendly horror film series- Mr Boogedy.

A few years later they revamped the movie catalog and started coming out with cartoon after cartoon, each one with more celebrities rammed into it than the last.  Then when they started running out of main characters to have voiced by big names they started adding in more and more background characters that had little if anything to do with the actual story, just so they could toss in more.  I mean, who voiced Cinderella?  Snow White?  You'd have to look it up, and if you did, the name of the actress probably wouldn't mean much to you, although we all know Whoopi Goldberg played a Hyena in the Lion King....

Old Walt may have been Anti-Semitic, but Disney's values have gone down hill fast since he checked out.  George Lucas may not have been able to leave well enough alone, but that pales in comparison to what the Disney Machine is going to do now that the Mouse is in charge.

Be afraid.... be very afraid.

The bean-counting reasons might be "Lucasarts hasn't made a decent game in years".

Just a thought.

Makes me think they bought the franchise just to stop anyone else from having it.

And here is a great big prize for the pretty lady with suspicious mind. If I had a chibi Boba plushie, it would be yours.

They know that they could put out movies that are basically "two stormtroopers, one helmet" and it would gross mega money opening weekend and the royalties on the stuff will pay off their next major flop. They will milk that cow to death, and they don't to lose the chance.

Other than the new movies, there hasn't been anything in Marvel that has excited me enough to actually spend money since Mickey took over there, either.

Why do you think Stan the Man sold it off to them anyway?  And why there's a whole new series of Spiderman movies being done?  And why there's been so many different Hulk movies?  Ole Stan knows where the money is...   :whistle:

Some of the rights to the superhero titles from Marvel are not owned by Disney but actually predate the purchase.

 X-men, Spider Man and a few others are actually owned by Fox which is why Captain America and Johnny Storm can be played by the same guy with no issues.  Chances are there will never be an Avengers/Fantastic Four crossover movie.
