My ST300 survival setup
on: June 24, 2013, 02:44:05 PM
I'd have to say despite its weight, I purchased the ST300 partly as an outdoor survival tool. The tools are slightly larger and I think it would be easier to clean than my Wave also. It sits in the glove box most of the time until I go hiking when it becomes part of a larger system, which incorporates a medium size fixed blade.
I originally bought the Gatco Scepter 2.0 sharpener as part of that system. But its fits pretty neatly here as you can see and offers the ability to sharpen serrated blades and has its own fire starter. The diagnostic torch I included mainly because I get them very cheaply and they have a long shelf life. I may swap this out upon arrival of a super cheap, super bright, AAA pocket torch I have on order.

I don't sell them or anything but here is the link
www.gatcosharpeners.com/carbide.mgi?mgiToken=8E4BN4381ACL05F4E2
It packs up to about the size of a large pen or medium size texter marker. So very light and portable. Tungsten carbide sharpening elements and removable tapered diamond rod. A small magnesium flint lives inside the diamond rod, and works great once you scrap off the coating. Maybe not as sparky as my $8 industrial size lump of ferrocerium. But very nifty and keeps it clean. Not that cheap. RRP $40. Cost me that down here. But I'm sure you could get one for a little over half that plus postage at one of the big online knife stores in the US.
They have a couple of other devices that do the same thing and cheaper. Perhaps not as high on the nifty factor however.
