Our car has been having a leak in one tire for some time now(6 months!) and finally after numerous visits to a tire shop a technician noticed this!  :ahhh :ahhh

Well a couple hundred dollars later with replacement rim and new tire it is fixed. OMG! those pot-holes can be so very bad! Not sure if it was me or my wife but this whole place has bad pot-holes.

How does that not get noticed the first time? When someone comes in with a leak rim damage is supposed to be the second thing you check. I smell incompetency. Also: ouch, that hit a pothole hard lol.

Our area is bad for potholes too, which is yet another reason I prefer trucks to cars.  I agree with the Frog- they should have seen that earlier.  That's pretty nasty looking.

I know exactly how you feel. I hit a pothole and immediately knew something was wrong. Pulled over and my wheel was bent worse than yours, but not cracked like yours and it had a slow leak. I had to replace my wheel (not tire) as well. Cost around $600 if I remember correctly. Not including any of the work.  I hate potholes. I literally know where every one is (on my normal route's) within a 30 mile radius. I think I need a truck.  :D

I had my wife take it in several times to 2 different places. Yes they might have been Wal-Mart  and some other unknown place but I also took it to a Discount Tire nearby and they missed it too! I have done mechanic type work in the past and I am really surprised this was missed before. Makes me wonder if some places even take the wheel off the car before they check for leaks!  >:(

Ouch!  That's definitely something that should have been noticed on the first trip in!!  Even myself, if I have a leak that I can't easily detect, I'll start spraying the bead with soapy water, then move to the tread until I find it.

I don't think any tire place hire actual mechanics to work on tires, you probably just had a bunch of high school kids on summer vacation look it over.

This is one of the instances I'm glad to have a truck, it's hell on gas but drives over potholes and don't get any door dings from dinks in parking lot who slam their door open and let their shopping cart run amok.

Every one seems to be indicating a truck is a solution to this, but I don't understand how a truck tire and rim would be any different

From the suspension up, it make sense, though.

More and thicker rubber, so tire less likely to be damaged and rim isn't going to be hit. Oh and bigger/wider tires don't fall into the smaller holes car tires do.

I'm not saying that a truck is the be all end all solution to this, since it also hits the potholes with a lot more mass than the average car, but yeah, Jie is right- there's generally a lot more rubber between the pothole and the rim on most trucks.

That's also one of the main reasons I'm looking to go to a larger tire and smaller rim- more rubber between rim and road means even less chance of rim damage.  Of course, all the kids out there that put huge rims and low profile tires on their cars are even more susceptible.

I'm not a kid, but my better half borrowed my car while hers was in the shop a couple of months ago and hit a pothole.

Bent the rim on one of my forged Japanese wheels and tore the sidewall out of a Bridgestone Potenza S03.

One solution is to use steel rims, as they are less prone to cracks (simply more elastic material), can be straightened and are cheaper. They are offcourse less cool and heavier.
I have steel rims and normal profile tyres on my harder use off-road vehicles.

I am always a bit sceptic   ::) when I see people with expensive alloy rims and low profile tyres claiming to use their off-road vehicles hard. (even climbing on pavements can damage your rims)

Yes, I agree- low profile tires have no place off road.  Low profile tires really increase the handling of a vehicle on road due to a lot less flex, but that's assuming the road doesn't have any bumps, like a race track.  Start adding in typical road hazards like potholes, cracks, construction, rocks etc and you start to have trouble- and with expensive alloy rims it can mean expensive trouble.

Yeah, unfortunately our Nova Scotia roads are not kept up enough to have nice low profile tires on nice rims.  A friend of ours imports cars from Japan, Supras, Eclipses, ect. and does them up and sells them.  He's been through a few sets of rims/tires, and he hardly drives them at all.
