Old Fisherman(?) - what to do?
on: June 26, 2013, 06:49:06 PM
This old knife arrived today. Seems like a heavily used Fisherman with old type tools, corroded liners, heavily sharped blades, broken scale and a broken scissor.

What do you think?
Harvest, sent it to Victorinox for repair or repair it on my own (including custom scales)?

I didn't make a poll, I would like to read, what you think. :)

Well, at least the scissors seem reparable....

But seriously, I think you can make this quite awesome, but you'd need another SAK to harvest from, I guess... Don't know if it's worth that much. The bail is awesome, though. :tu:

I say you try and fix it up yourself as a little project. I personally don't think sending it into Victorinox would be very chipper, but that's just my .2 cents. It still has plenty of life left.  :tu:

Yep,I'm with the Cap on this one. If it were me,I'd look at the idea of rebuilding, but keeping as much of the Origional as possible. Love he square Philips!

Let it live again!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I love reviving old knives like this one.
I'd be looking for a suitable donor (or two) to supply the parts.
You'd need something pre-73 for the small clip point blade.
I believe a set of solid Cellidor scales can be cut to fit the round Awl.

If you decide to send it to Vic' I'd make two suggestions.
1. Do the right thing and offer to pay for the repairs.
2. Tell them it has sentimental value or something or you might just end up with a new fisherman.

I have had a knife with the old awl where newer solid scales were filed to fit by Vic Service.

If you decide to resurrect it, i guess i have a pair of solid scales I´d donate.
And i think i havea flluted (yet 4 windings long) corkscrew and maybe some fitting liners, too.

Sorry, was away for a short trip to an european/asian metropol.  :D

Well thanks @lowtech. I'll come back to your offer as soon as I have news from victorinox. I'm waiting for a quotation for my knife (sent pics and details I want to have repaired).

Even if I decide to take this knife as a basis for a mod (and I'm currently thinking of my Swisschamp-Cybertool-Lite-watchmaker tool) I have one big issue: The main blade, which is thicker than today's blades and which has been sharpened to much. This blade I would have to exchange. (Even if I just restore it)

The knife is on it's way to Ibach. I'm curious what they can do with it.  :mail:

If it is repaired, I have the next problem of course. I don't consider myself as a collector.

I know that feeling - It´s the reason the nice refurbished old Camper now lives in Greece - I could not bring myself to using it and I am no collector (My Fiance will not agree, though).
Hence teh steady flow of tools - Buy or trade, test and either keep in rotation or pass on....

Nonetheless I´m curious what they can do for the old knife at Ibach.
