Skeletool CX rusty
on: April 29, 2008, 10:59:30 AM
I've had my CX for about two weeks now, quite happy with it. Been carrying it around in my pocket, and sometimes in my bag. Thing is, it's starting to rust. Not the whole thing, just the plier head, spots here and there.

Is this normal? I've used the pliers only lightly so far, just to remove some tacks from a chipboard. I've used the screwdriver extensively, but that's holding up well, in good shape except that the black coating is almost gone--no rust there.

I read the thread on LM tools rusting, but thought I'd create a new one to see if light user has had the same experience. I don't think tools should remain pristine, they are meant to be used. But if this is happening just after 2 weeks, and I haven't even really put it to heavy use yet, it just seems weird.

Normal? Yes and no.

I'm a firm believer that your body sweat has as much as an effect on the corrosion of tools as the environment you use them in. My tools remain almost entirely rust free and I work is a hot, humid environment and use my tools almost exclusively with wet hands. After every shift there are condensation beads all over the tool from being next to my sweaty body but they have yet to create a rust problem. However my brother will have rust form in the shape of his fingerprints in mere hours if he uses a tool a lot and then puts it away without wiping it down.

The best bet would be to get some polish or a rust eraser and remove the rust as it forms and wipe down the tool every few days with a protective oil.

That or buy a Swisstool.  ;)

FYI, I have gotten 1-2 rust speckles on both skeletool and CX models

No rust here at all, but I'm in dry Colorado.

Got some starting on my skeletool, some on the pliers and some on the screwdriver lock assembly.
