Modding a better Flik
on: July 19, 2013, 09:13:29 PM
So I have started trying to convince myself that I need a Flik (I don't know why - That's why I come here). The Flik's large tools include big scissors, a saw, and two blades. The Flik Fish swaps the saw for a file/hook sharpener/remover tool. I don't like two dedicated blades on a MT if I am going to be missing something I deem useful. Otherwise, I would prefer a combo blade. So I got to thinking the other day: steal the file thing from the Flik Fish and put it in place of the serrated blade on a standard Flik. Seems do-able.

Secondly, I don't like the PE blade on the Flik (just judging by the short cutting edge vs length of implement). Would a knife from a different model Gerber work on a Flik?

Any thoughts? Not much Gerber modding going on, but even fewer Flik mods.

Can't say for certain (not without taking my Flik apart), but looking at it I can't instantly see why you couldn't pull out the SE blade and fit the file in there. :)  It would definitely make for a better tool selection IMO. :tu:

Not so sure about swapping out the PE blade for one from a different MT though, the blades from a MP600/400 definitely don't look like they'll fit.  In fairness to the Flik's PE blade, I didn't much like the look of it either, but it's actually never caused me any issues in use. :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

That would be a shame in my opinion... I find the SE blade on the Flick to be great, better than SE on some LM.

Same here. I kinda like flik the way that it is. Those art deco serration might not look the part but they have gone through tough manila cordage faster than any serrated edge I've tried.

I am not disputing the effectiveness of the blade and I actually like that style of SE blade. I just prefer having the four pillars of MT on a tool: Blade, Scissors, File, Saw.

Oh...my apologies man-  that wasn't what I meant rdub...hell... Now I don't even know what i was meaning to say. I was reading my post and I should've structured my wordings better. I was meaning to say that, If I was to choose my mod, I would keep the serrated blade and replace the straight blade with the file since those serrations may not look the part but they have gone through tough manila cordage faster than any serrated edge I've tried and I believe that the serrated blade will perform as good as the straight edged blade which be replaced by the file.

It's all good. I didn't think you were being critical, just voicing your opinion which is totally fine IMO. :)

I did misunderstand you though. Bottom line, I only want one blade on my MTs. I prefer plain edge personally, but I have also never used a SE blade like the one on the Flik. I would give it a fair shot before making any final decisions though. I don't know when I would ever even break down and buy a Flik, honestly. I was just tossing the idea around.

Thanks for weighing in!
