Which sheath should I get for my Surge?
on: May 02, 2008, 03:21:59 AM
As far as I can tell (from Leatherman.com) there is a nylon sheath and a "leather" sheath.  Are either of these able to hold a bit kit?  Which is more comfortable/sturdy?

I remember in the review here there is also a "pancake" type generic Leatherman sheath, but that's not even an option, it looks terrible!

Where would be the best (cheapest  :D ) place to get a Surge sheath and/or a bit card kit?

Um, I wouldn't recommend buying off LM.com. It takes a LONG time to get to your house. I would try the banner advertisers and if not go to moontrail.com I have dealt with them many a times and never a problem. Well, I like both sheaths. I would recommend the nylon because it's more comfortable and it can hold the bit kit. The leather one rides pretty high on belt.

I haven't EDCed it yet :D  It fits in that Countycomm sheath...but the sheath isn't that comfortable on my belt.  It sticks out way too much (it's padded so it makes it bigger).  That sheath is probaably going to go on my Countycomm EOD bag I'm getting Monday though.

Does the nylon Surge sheath stick out much, or is it pretty tight around the tool?

Without a bit kit it's pretty tight around the tool.

If it's anything like wave's sheath, go with nylon. I HATE the fake leather sheath came with wave, very uncomfortable while on belt, even when empty.

How I carry my Surge.  As some of you have seen with me wearing my Proteous.  In the right side is my Surge, its diamond metal saw and adapter bit. The left side has a set of mini-binoculars and a Wave.  On the front exterior pouch(molle points) is my Skeletool(original flavor).  Inside the front pouch is a yellow Wenger-evogrip, Scibeer stayglow abrasive yeoman, lipbalm, matches compass, signal mirror, whistle, JD(jerzee devil) titanium card, swisscard.  And in the main pouch is some yellow 550paracord, LED minimag, duct tape, hand sanitizer, matches, and my keys.  and 1 add on pouch(5.11) for .the cellphone.

Get the Surge sheath with the back brace and wheels....  :pok:

Seriously, I haven't seen the leather sheath for it, but the nylon sheath is great.  It's got a handy pocket for spare blades, and is quite compact- or at least as compact as it can be with such a huge tool inside!  It's actually much nicer than the Core's nylon sheath:

Core left, Surge right.

I suggest the Maxpedition Single Pouch sheath. It carries the SURGE well and is very rugged. I think Marc at EDCDepot has Maxpedition gear...

Anyone know if there are any Leatherman compatible nylon pouches that use a snap rather than velcro?  I really cannot stand having velcro closure on my pouches.  That's one of the big reasons I love my Swisstool.

I also can't stand the ripping sound velcro makes when you open it. By the way I think leatherman only have the snap on their leather sheath.

I just tried my Surge in the leather sheath it was supplied with.

It has an elasticated 'pocket' inside to take a bit kit holder. It fits pretty tightly, but my sheath hasn't been used much, so I guess it would soften a bit with use.

Hope the following pictures help you to visualise it:
