Industrial MP1 featured on Gerber Website
on: July 13, 2013, 06:37:15 PM
http://www.gerbergear.com/Industrial/Tools/MP1-Multi-Tool_31-001142

Formerly thought to be called the Shift, the Industrial MP1 has made its debut on the website. I am still baffled by Gerbers tools this year, and this one is no exception. They don't seem to be well thought out, in my opinion. This tool has a bit driver but also includes 2 flat screwdrivers. It has 2 knife blades. It also has 2 prybars. No scissors, saw, file, or can opener though.

At any rate, the G10 handles and forged 6150 CS spring loaded pliers are cool. So it has some serious potential. $115 MSRP is too rich for my blood.

Note: Assembled in Portland, Oregon. We know what that means...

I'm really liking the looks of that!  I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one, but not at that price.  I can't wait to see some pics and reviews from members here when they get them.

At $65 I'd grab one for sure.  $115, not so much....  I do like the idea of a dedicated prybar.  The bottle openers on my Vics and Wengers see a lot of use in that role....

Nah, Gerber has the very annoying habit of redirecting all links to the local sites, so as I am in Spain just now I keep getting redirected to Gerber.es  ::)

I have to say, I like the looks of that one. It kind of reminds me of a slimmed down Strata.

Whoa, plier jaws forged from 6150 carbon steel! (instead of cast from stainless steel) Despite the puzzling blade selection, this one sounds like it might have potential. :)

I like the look of that tool. I want one if the price drops.
The specs in the pdf from Detron describes 3blades, but I cant see the utility blade. Is it just me that is blind?  ( the link is not working when I try to open it) Are there any pics of it closed?

Yeah, that's the feature that I've been drooling over since this one was first announced.

Does it say anywhere if that bit driver is a proper 1/4"?  Or is it yet another odd size that nothing else will fit in?

Here's the text from the website. Note part where it says it can use any bit:

You don’t need more tools—you need the right tools. We didn’t design the Gerber MP1 Multi-Tool just to have the most components; we designed it to deliver the ones you need most often, made from the best materials around. Built with 12 professional-grade components, including pliers, three blades, three screwdrivers and a pry bar bottle opener, the MP1 also distinguishes itself with its distinctive butterfly design and high quality carbon steel, spring-loaded jaws. As easy to use as it is tough, this Multi-Tool’s compact, lightweight construction provides a utilitarian tool that makes quick work of light- and heavy-duty tasks.

Professional Gerber Quality and the Tools You Need
Knowing that you’re going to rely on the plier jaws more than any other component, we forged them from high carbon steel to handle the wear and tear of daily abuse. The result is a commercial-quality tool designed for working professionals, yet user-friendly and compact enough for home tinkering needs, too. The forged, spring-loaded pliers open easily and are ready to perform. To help avoid accidental closure, all components feature an integrated wedge lock.

Those who rely on a multi-tool at work will appreciate the simplicity and durability of the MP1’s tool selection. Think, one tool in your nail bags, rather than six. There are three blade styles to choose from: the all-important fine edge blade, a multi-purpose fully-serrated blade—both made from 420 HC stainless steel—and a smaller do-it-all utility blade, to handle the mundane and the delicate. The MP1’s two sizes of flat blade screwdrivers handle a wide range of screw heads, and the universal magnetic bit driver will fit any bit available, and it comes with a versatile #2 Phillips to help keep you prepared.

Designed as a Daily Driver
A daily driver like the MP1 needs to feel good in your hand. The tool’s molded composite G-10 grip eliminates sharp edges, while its textured surface adds security in cold or wet job sites. Rounding out the MP1’s 12 components is a pry bar to save you from damaging a blade when tackling that hard-to-open paint can. Better still, the pry bar doubles as a bottle opener when thirst finally drags you away from your work. You can count on Gerber for a lifetime warranty and a sturdy nylon sheath to keep your multi-tool within easy reach.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Good man Bob. :D

Cheers for the copy and paste Milhouse.  I'm actually liking this more and more; OHO PE and SE blades, small 'utility' blade, prybar/bottle opener, what sounds to be a proper 1/4" bit driver and a couple of flat drivers.  Sprung pliers I can actually do without, but I'm loving the idea of a forged head. 8)

Now, for all you folks thinking "why have a bit driver plus two flats?", well by having a Phillips in the bit driver and the two flats there is no 'need' to carry any extra bits around with you to have a good selection of drivers, but it still gives you the option of doing so if that's what you want.  Also the two dedicated flat drivers look to have a good reach for more recessed screws, can't argue with that I think.

The only thing I would really have liked to have seen on this is a good file, but that's just a personal preferance.  The MP1 has just jumped high on to my want list, depending on Bobs review of course. :pok: ;)

I also saw the Amazon listing last night, and also ordered one. :)  Like Def said, it looks like a slightly modified Strata. I do like the Strata, so we shall see....

We didn’t design the Gerber MP1 Multi-Tool just to have the most components; we designed it to deliver the ones you need most often, made from the best materials around.

Three blades
Three flat blade drivers AND a bit driver which implies hex bits
Gone to the trouble of forging jaws, but then hidden a spring inside which weakens them by reduced cross section
No Scissors
No awl
No saw
No file
No pocket clip or lanyard point

Who is this guy who needs three blades, three flat drivers and a hex bit driver?
Why does he need pliers that will rust easily and that are NOT as strong as SOLID cast ones because of the spring cavity?
Does he really not need an awl to start all those screws off he's planning on driving?
Every tool needs scissors!

Gerber have brought out some very respectable tools lately with the Dime, Fit, Balance, Octane ... but now they seen to have lost the plot again this year with the Bullshi... I mean Bullrush (the Crucial Mk II), and now this. It's like they decided the Balance was too balanced and they needed to balance that out by releasing the Gerber Unbalanced   :ahhh :ahhh

I look forward to seeing reviews though, and any insider info as to what mind altering substances are being issued to the design and marketting teams  :tu:

This thing weighs almost as much as a Wave, but does not have nearly as much functionality. I just cannot get over all that this tool doesn't have on it, yet is still as heavy as it is.

I wish Gerber would work on making a better Flik. I feel like folding MTs are covered by SOG and Leatherman.

Seems like it could be a nice multi, but for the price... well that's SwissTool dollars right there. I think I'd rather spend $30 and get a MP600 off eBay. Still, I look forward to seeing some reviews from those who took the plunge.
