Quick question, and an awesome story
on: September 07, 2013, 02:57:08 AM
I will start with the quick question, then the story will explain why I ask.

what is a realistic ballpark value of a 20th Anniversary Wave, never opened?

The Story

Today my duties at work had me dealing with the Fire chief at the local fire station.  I have had a good work friendship with him for 11 years.

of course, as a lover of MTs and SAKs, I noticed the leather Leatherman sheath with the lettering like the picture below

so, I asked which one he had and as he handed it to me, I noticed it was a 20th Anniversary Wave.

I explained that it was worth more than a normal one, and he said  And I quote

"Really, I have 2 or 3 more still in the package at home somewhere"   :tu:

turns out 10 years ago, he bought a bunch and gave them to the fire fighters as a Christmas gift.  He had one for himself, and ended up having extras as a few fire fighters left right before Christmas.

He would be happy to sell me one, or maybe even 2, but I do not want to under-cut him.

so if anyone had a fair price in mind, I will let him know, if it is out of my price range, he may sell them here through me.  (He liked the donation idea when an item is sold here  :tu:)

I felt honored to hold that Leatherman

Just off the top, I'd say at least $100 if it's new-in-package.  But there were two different versions of the 20th anniversary Wave; one with Tim Leatherman's signature, and one without.  The signature version is more valuable.

Oh, and if he's willing to sell one more, I might be willing to take it off his hands.  :D

Thanks everyone.   I did not know to look for the Tim Leatherman signature,   but I will let him know and see if he can find them, and hopefully sell them.

More to follow as this situation develops ;D

Happy to help!  :salute:  but I still call first dibs if he has any extras...  :D

For reference, I recently picked up a lightly used 20th anniversary Wave (no signature) for around $60 and felt like I got a good deal; that's where my estimate of $100 came from.

Maybe it would be a nice idea to swap him the 2 20th anniversary ones for 2 new users he can use or give away and pay the rest in cash?! So he still has 2 backup tools without the hassle to buy tehm himself and made 2 collectors happy.
Would be the way I´d do it, i think. And mybe add a pack or 2 of Coffe or a box of Muffins/Doughnuts he can bring over to the Boys / Girls on the Fire department. Adds not much cost but shows that you value the deal.
