Attack of the angry Bee.
on: September 22, 2013, 07:17:36 AM
Yikes. I fell asleep watching TV and woke to something buzzing loudly by my right ear. I went to turn on the light, which I do by blindly moving my right hand to the light switch...and grabbed something very much alive which I promptly released right quick. I jumped out of my chair and saw the angriest bee I have ever seen. It took about 20 minutes for it to settle down on my now turned on lamp. It was agitated and attacking the shiny metal surface of the lamp. I hightailed it out of my living room and came back with a fly swatter and my electric swatter. Now somewhat armed, my two cats and myself stared at the bee for another 10 minutes or so until it eventually calmed down. As the bee kept doing circles around the floor lamp shade, I realized that if I stunned it with my electric swatter, and tick it off enough, I could be in trouble. I quickly placed the swatters down and converted my Dyson from floor to the wand configuration and simply sucked that ticked off bee into the vacuum.

Now that the buzzing bee is now safely in my vacuum with no way out, I am still creeped out by that close call in the safety of my home. Not sure how it came into my house, but thinking that I actually grabbed it and could have been stung by it...well, my mind is in overdrive right now creating imaginary creepy crawlies all over the place.

glad you escaped unscathed, well except for emotionally.

I understand stinging insects

I had several stings of the ones and twos as a kid, but I also had some high count attacks.

14ish - stuck in a 6 foot hole with fire ants for about 20 minutes.  we were removing a gigantic pecan tree stump, and I was inside the hole we were digging with a chan saw trying to cut through the stump below ground level.  My grandfather went to get the other chain saw, and while he was gone, the ants started and I could not climb out due to the dirt being very sandy. this resulted in over 1800 bites (OK, maybe because I was panicking)

16 or 17 years old, over 400 stings by ground hornets!  yep, those hurt soo much worse than bees, yellow jackets, wasps, fire ants, etc

18 years old, doctors quit counting bee stings at 500.  (I was removing branches from the upper part of a pine tree about 45 feet up, hit a bee hive, and had to just hod on to the tree until they quit)

the funny thing is how I am less scarred of stings now than before.  I guess just one at a time is less scarey now.

If I can help, let me know

What kind of bee was it?  I have a huge respect for bees, and usually try to catch and release them in the rare occasion I find them in my house.  Hornets and wasps on the other hand are fair game, as they are aggressive, can sting multiple times, and my dog Eddie greatly enjoys catching and eating bugs.  I have heard of bugs stinging down a dog's throat, causing swelling and death to the dog so I don't take any chances.

Honey bees I do my best to help in every way possible, and bumbles are just so pointless I would feel bad killing one.

It was a honey bee. I tried to save it, but could see no way of catch and releasing it (I know they are in a world decline). Freaked me out for a good half hour afterwards though. I have never been stung by any bee, wasp, or hornet. Usually I leave them alone and they leave me alone. This time I had inadvertently grabbed it, making it very ornery. Got to love how the imagination plays tricks on you afterwards. I kept telling myself that my imagination was in hyper drive and the sensation of things crawling on me did not exist.

My first sting was around 12ish, I got whacked in the back of the calf by two yellow jackets or something like such, no biggie, but I freaked out, but I was fine, the next week I got stung in the hand by a bumble bee, the only reason I know this cause it left it's stinger in my finger, but by the end of the day my hand was twice the size, I couldn't bend my fingers, it was so freaking big, after a week I could touch my fingers to my thumb, and after two weeks I could finally make a fist. But the one good one was when I was mowing the lawn, I was in a pair of shorts, used the weed wacker, hut a little no biggie, but then I was using the law mower and all of a sudden, ouch, ok just a piece of flying something, ouch another, then ouch ouch ouch, what the heck? I turn around and there's a freaking bunch of yellow jackets coming out too the ground! Now I'm on using a push mower and if you let go they have that cut off bar, well I put a piece of Velcro on it so if my wife bright me out a drink, or if I had to move something, I didn't have to stop it and restart it or even mowing the whole time! Well I slipped it on and rolled it over there hole and walked away for ten min! Boy were they pissed! Bad thing was I had to go get the mower, they just kept coming, and you could hear them come out then get pinged by the mower, bad thing was it didn't kill them just piss them off even more. I must have got at least eight stings, later that night I went to the store and bought a can of foaming spray, it said to wait till night when they sleep and just spray it in the hole, well I let loose, and first thing next morning I went out to see, and nothing! I was like cool beans something that worked for once!  :tu: JR

I've never been at all afraid of bees but I have gotten stung many times. Just the other day I was moving some wood and noticed a hole in the ground. There was something white in the hole and naturally I poked it with a stick. Mistake! It was an underground bees nest. I remember a few years ago there was a honey bee nest in a dead tree behind my house. You could actually smell honey when you walked over to it. Unfortunately a few years ago the entire nest mysteriously died. :(

I've never been stung by anything worse than a mosquito, in my life :) I usually don't mind bees and wasps too much, as long as they don't mind me...

I have a fear of bees to the point where their nearby imminent buzz instills a paralyzing cringe. I have been stung before by honey bees but that doesn't make their presence any easier. When I was little, the nearness of the barbers electric trimmer to my ear caused a similar cringe. I just can't stand buzzy-flying things for some reason. So you have my complete understanding any sympathies.  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Mosquito could 'sting' too, one time I was 'stung' by one, and I sworn I must have pulled out a thin needle from skin about I smash that sucker in a pile of blood.

I usually stay the hack away from bee/honet/wasp or the like, never know who in my group will be allergic to the sting.  I remembered getting sting by one under the pants on thigh (yes, I wonder to this day how the hack it could get in there, and mind you it wasn't the 70s), and after I got back to the apartment, I took of the pants to let it out, capture it with a glass and let it out to wild afterwards.

Not afraid of them but grabbing one in the safety of my own home whilst half asleep safe and sound did play a lovely mind game with me afterwards.

I loved to climb trees as a kid but I always had a suspicion there would be a bee on top of a branch and when I reached up and grabbed the branch I would grab the bee too. I'm not scared of bees but that always worried me slightly.
