I saw those movies and my first thought was:
"Hum, so this is what Cocoon would look like if it took place in MTo instead of a retirement home..."

Guess what my boy is getting for Christmas tomorrow  ???  :D  :o

I hope he is as excited about it as I am  :tu:

He does not quite make the recommended 9+  .... He is 7 next March.
But he knows where I keep my MT in our living room drawer and is always borrowing it for wee jobs already
He is a very safety concious and aware child - So it will be fine  :tu:

Although I won't install the blade for at least a year.
Even though the saw, scissors etc are sharp - In terms of accidental injury, I reckon the blade is the more dangerous - So we'll see how we go.

Happy days  :D  :D  :D

Awesome!!! I wanted to get one for my Son, but he's a little too young still. He's been asking for his own tool, though.  Next year.

I think all of our boys that see their dads using multitools from the time they are born, always what to do what daddy does. So having and using their very own multitool is far beyond imagination for them. I think the your boy will be excited! ! Mine is around 4 and uses my multitools always under my supervision! !!

I think the leap is a great idea! I like that the knife can be added later. I remember my first multitool. I got it when I went to Europe with my Mom and grandparents at the age of 4. I got a small SKA. I still have it too! Just missing the toothpick. I remember slicing at some wheat while Pop was checking the cows. I sliced my finger and told him a bee stung me so he wouldn't take my knife away! Lol! He let me keep it and never scolded me or said it was a knife cut instead.

Why must manufacturers market models made especially for kids?  It seems a little redundant. Also, blunted (or missing) blades make it useless for some things.  I have my first SAK, the Fieldmaster, which my grandfather bought me at the end of the school year when I was ten and in the fourth or fifth grade. Before that, I had a bunch of quality American and German made knives, plus a load of Chinese crap.  I cut my fingers (literally hundreds of times by now), but never, ever stabbed myself.

I think the Theo Klein SAK would be great to teach kids how to use an SAK without anything sharp or pointy. Leatherman should make something similar.

Great approach. And maybe some learning to adults tools as well. Like tool opening. And blade you can attach (maybe add blade you prefer as next step).

I have stabbed myself plenty enough, mostly on scalpels however. I guess that a rounded edge would be more for the safety of people around the kid (a gesture with a knife in hand might end up badly...). A SOG without the compound leverage so that a parent could remove the blade or round it and then exchange it while not requiring the huge hands that the compound leverage results in would be really nice (the PPP is of a size I could give to a kid, supposing I traded the half serrated edge for a rounded plain edge until the kid was of a decent age).
