hello from Romania ;)
on: October 11, 2013, 04:04:04 PM
Hello guys,

I'm Alex, and just looking for buying my first multi tool, as I am a lot outdoors for hiking, MTB, 4x4 and backcountry skiing.

At the top of my list is the Leatherman Super 300.

would love to have a multi tool with a metal saw, but that is very rare - it is to be found in Super Tool 300 EOD, but at the expense of having only the needle nose pliers, and losing the regular pliers.

Do you have any suggestions?

You can take a look at the Surge, which has the blade exchanger. You can carry an aftermarket metal saw with it. That, or try the Gerber MP600 Pro Scout, which also has a changeable saw, but that one has a less standard coupling.

@bmot: thx for the advice, can you please confirm that the Surge can be used with regulat t-shank jigsaw blades, like these http://www.boschtools.com/Products/Accessories/Pages/BoschAccessoryDetail.aspx?pid=1326#specs ?
Then this may well be the solution for me, as it is easy to carry a spare saw blade.
It also needs the screwdriver bits - compared to the 4 screwdrivers standard of the Super Tool 300

Welcome mate  i personaly prefer the surge to the st300,both great heavy duty mt's but i prefer outside opening tools like the main blade and saw, plus its t,shank exchanger is fantastic  :salute: as a long time wave user the surge is my go to heavy duty mt for big jobs and highly recommend it,i used a powerlock for my maintenance job as well as other mt's but the surge has been my favourite by a long shot  :tu:

It depends, if you have the patience, you can buy the new-style Surge, which has the same pliers as the ST300, and an upgraded t-shank adapter which takes the regular t-shank blades. The old style Surge, which is now still sold, has the older pliers, and regular t-shank blades are a bit too thin for the adapter. You can cure this with a simple piece of shrink-tube or tape around the shank, though.

Oh, and what I forgot to mention: Welcome, from the looow lands on the other side of Europe  :salute:

I also LOVE my Surge.  It is a great tool!  and the blade exchanger is a nice touch also because it allows you to not only use other blades, but you can remove the blade if you ever have to use it in a tight spot.
If I can help, let me know

Welcome to the forum! Did you consider the swisstool? It has a metal saw and is around the same size as the supertool 300.

I agree, but I think he is looking for the thinner hacksaw type metal saw that is on the ST300 EOD

If I can help, let me know

Ah yes. The victorinox metal saw is not a full substitute for a hacksaw.

It should have been out already. Apparently they'll be making them available when the dealers clear out their current stock of old style Surges or something like that. ::) So if you plan to buy locally it might be a bit of a long wait. The US eBay sellers and similar should have them sooner. Stick around here and we'll probably be the first to know when these become available for sale and where. Quite a few people have been waiting on the new Surge to come out.

I've just got back from a store after holding for a few minutes the Surge, the Rebar and the MUT.

I found that the Surge seems incredibly heavy :( even compared to the MUT (354 grams of the Surge vs the 317.5 grams of the MUT).  I did not put them on the scale, I am just talking 'bout how they felt in my hand.

I mean the MUT did not feel so heavy... and the difference is just about 40grams

Hmmm... look what I have found, digging and searching the forum:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,4144.msg64799.html#msg64799

This may solve my issue - need for a metal saw on the multitool. This way I may go for a lighter tool that will not take an important toll on my backpack weight ;) when hiking / skinning up

LE - and the original topic : http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,95.0.html
Great work!

I ended up (or should I say started up) buying the Wave - and I am very happy with it so far!

I am looking to the following mods:
- bit driver locking at 90 degrees angle
- hacksaw blades made to fit in the lanyard / pocket clip locking slot (http://forum.multitool.org/general-tool-discussion/charge-saws/150/)
- strap cutting hook on the serrated blade (or maybe replacement blade with a hook)

Did you find the thread already where it's explained how to create a 90° locking driver? If not, HERE IT IS. :salute:

There are currently some replacement serrated blades with hook on eBay.

@enki_ck: Thank you for pointing out the topic about the 90 degrees locking screwdriver tool!

I am also looking at this mod http://forum.multitool.org/leatherman-tools/leatherman%28new-wave%29-adapted-to-regular-14%27-hex-bits/ because it seems very useful (to me) to be able to use regular hex bits. They are easier to find in a variety of types - and one can select what to carry depending on his needs.

will post pics soon - probably I'll have to start a new topic.

They do sell a ready-made bit adapter, too... http://www.leatherman.com/131.html#start=4

@bmot: I am aware of that add-on they sell but prices are high here, and most probably I have an older adapter that sits in a drawer and that may meet the grinder :D
