New guy, first 91mm mod. I have a compatibility question.

I am planning to build a yeoman of sorts. I have an older explorer I'm going to pull apart for the mag and inline Phillips layer. If I were to buy a new compact, would this older layer be compatible, or do I need to find an older compact? I know there are differences in the liners but I don't know if it matters in this case.   :sak:

It'll fit just fine.  If you need any extra liners I have a few hundred doing nothing. :D

Hi Josh,welcome to the madhouse!

As far as I know you shouldn't have any problems. The Masters of Mod will be along soon to give a proper opinion :D

Well there's one now
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Thanks guys! One other thing. Can I reuse the pins from the explorer since I'll be doing three layers on the new knife? Will there be enough length left on them after drilling them out? I'm also planning to go a differentro ute with the back tools. I'm going to keep the corkscrew but I think I'm going todump the hook  for the awl.

Some problems there with switching to the awl as the hook layer is thicker and the awl is thinner. I think some have been able to reuse the pins for a thinner layer knife if you are careful in their removal, but as I have no direct knowledge of it you might wait until someone else who has done some MOD's tells you.

Yep reusing pins should not be a problem as long as you're careful.  I harvest scissor layers from super tinkers and reuse the same pins to assemble the tinker after.

The awl wont work on the scissors layer.  That stupid hook has a big round hump for a pivot and all the other backlayer tools dont.  Otherwise you could shim it with tiny washers and make it work.  But as it is, nope, only that hook will fit.

Welcome to the forum, Josh. :waving:

Also be very careful while drilling out the pins not to damage or loose the bushings. Those thing are very hard to find once you drop them on the floor. :ahhh

Maybe another opinion could be to repurpose the hook into a awl
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I would recommend locating the older version of the Climber or Super Tinker to get the spring without the hook.

If you are interested in a scissor layer without backspring tool, I can maybe help - I have 2 or 3 older SAKs I don´t use that I would let go for modding puroses.

You (or anybody interested, for taht matter...) can contact me via PM.
