Gerber Strata

Normally I'm not really a Gerber guy. In fact if I was to buy a Gerber it was going to buy a blunt nose MP600. But the Strata is pretty cheap. Should I buy it?
The tools I get most use out of normally is my LM Wave, LM CS and Vic Soldier.
Eventually even McGyver got himself a Leatherman

The only way I surrounded myself with tools I'm happy with was by trying them. Lots and lots of them. Popular ones and unpopular ones. I'd say grab it if it's cheap and give it a whirl. The Strata has both fans and dissenters here, but only you can tell if it's any good for you.

Plus sides are spring loaded pliers, OHO blade, outboard tools, 3D Phillips, and all locking drivers. Downsides are that it isn't the most robust tool in the world (don't over exert it - it's not as robust as the Wave/MP600), and the locks can be a PITA to release. It has no pocket clip, but it is a pocketable size.

Don't forget the piccies and review once you've tried it for a while  ;)

I like the Strata- it is a good solid tool, and quite underrated in my books.  It is a bit bulky with the plastic handles, but that makes it a bit more comfortable to hold and use, especially when using it in a cold environment or with gloves.

It's well worth giving it a shot, and if you don't like it I'm sure someone here would be only too happy to buy it from you, so you really don't have much to lose.

Oddly today ive been thinking about the strata and have watched a few youtube vids on it plus reviews,it has a few features i like including outside tools and spring loaded pliers, i like my sidekick and wondered how these 2 compare vs each other  i liked my mp800 but too bulky for a daily carry so possibly the strata could be the answer  :tu:

I like the Strata as well.  I got mine for a nice discount because it was a display model, but it was unused.  I haven't had an issue with the locks at all, the pliers are nice, and the Phillips is one of the best Gerber makes.  It is a bit on the bulky side, but certainly manageable.  I say go for it, find out for yourself how it goes.   :tu:

I got the Bear Grylls Survival Tool Pack for Christmas last year. It has an almost-Strata tool.

It's not as good in Fit and Finish as a Wave, but seems to be a good tool. The actual Strata adds replaceable wire cutters to the mix.

It's the first Gerber full size MT that I got and kept, if that says anything.

boss, I might be mistaken , but I think the handles on the strata are made of aluminum? oh wait ... I think you were referring to the overlay that serves as sliders for the locks, then yeah it kinda adds to the overall real estate.

I bought the strata after I went over Tom Jerseydevil's review and I have been very happy with how it served my needs. Take heed, tho as the more experienced have spoken. It's no supertool 300 or swisstool, but if used within it's limits, it should work wonders.
Cheers,
Gabriel

I cannot add anything useful, as the Strata I bought used had 2 broken tabs that shuold have held the plier head in the open position.

However, I did like to outside opening tools.

And, if anybody wants it: I have the plier head lying around. You could either use it to upgrade your BG Tool to a replaceable wire cutter or use the actual wire cutters as a backup.

Send me a PM, if you want it. You pay the stamp.

My Bear Grylls 'Strata' would appreciate the upgrade.
