English Muffins - American Muffins
on: November 21, 2013, 01:25:32 AM
This is not a contest on which is better or anything like that. Just wanted to try and understand/clear something up I have always wondered about. Let me start off by saying I had no idea people called muffins (American muffins) before about 5 minutes ago. Anyways, I was going to ask the English members on the forum if they ate and called (what I know them as) English muffins in England. They look like this.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AX6q66lD96E/TUa1OLEd1GI/AAAAAAAAB1Y/FbOUDAYfNm0/s1600/English+Muffins+-+open.jpg

I looked online before I asked this question and found out that English people just call "English muffin," muffins. And what I call a muffin you call an "American muffin." Which looks like this.

So Mate's.... Do you find this to be true? I find it more interesting now that I found out about the "American muffin" thing. I'm getting a bit hungry as well.

TBH I never seen a muffin of any discription til I was in my twenties, when the first 7/11s opened in SA,and those were the American type.

As a kid in Northern Ireland,we had our own pan breads, soda farls and potato bread  . The English muffins I've only had as part of a Micky D breakfast

+1 on the McRipoff Breakfast - that's the only time I'd encounter those types of muffins too. Muffins to me are buns, just like the blueberry one pictured in the OP, and they're pretty standard petrol station / motorway services fare. As a breakfast or snack, I'm much more likely to buy crumpets or some nice seeded bread for use at home.

Her dad's called Nigel; she's called Nigella...

Anyhoo... I like both types, sweet and savoury, and I call them both muffins. I don't think I've ever heard them referred to as American muffins. I quite like the ones with cheese baked in. Mm, cheesy!   :D  I like to spread them with marmite.

So, if Canadians call ham "Canadian bacon", what do they call actual bacon?  American bacon?    ???

Here we generally call bacon "bacon" and Canadian bacon "back bacon".  While back bacon is similar to ham I believe it's cut from a different part of the pig.

Ok, a muffin is a muffin, or possibly a toasted muffin.  An 'American' muffin isn't called an American muffin, but will usually be identified by it's component flavouring.  So if I was to ask for a blueberry muffin, no-one would think I wanted a toasted muffin with blueberries on top.

Make sense?

Now to educate you all about bacon.......
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.
