Ok, a muffin is a muffin, or possibly a toasted muffin.  An 'American' muffin isn't called an American muffin, but will usually be identified by it's component flavoring.  So if I was to ask for a blueberry muffin, no-one would think I wanted a toasted muffin with blueberries on top.

Make sense?

Now to educate you all about bacon.......

Makes perfect sense because that's how I think of it.  :D  :tu:

Well, I don't care what it's called. English-type muffin, toasted, with cream cheese and gorp, which for me also has cashews, cranberries and dates along with the raisins, peanuts and M&Ms.

Muffins, the English sort, are the sort of thing I might have when visiting my parents at tea time. Come in from a walk, toast some muffins on the fire and have them with Marmite or jam. Nom.

Muffins, the upstart yank sort, are morning snack material bought at a motorway service station.

Marmite or jam. Nom.

When I was in the UK in April/May I tasted Marmite for the first time... I have never tasted something that taste so terrible in my entire life. It should be classified as a chemical weapon and not food.

From a UK point of view this is spot on.  Muffins were the dense bread rolls.  Around 15 years the  cake things came along and the they just got called muffins as well, but with 'chocolate'  or 'blueberry in front. Amusingly some large ' stores' used a stars and stripes in the packaging,  just so you knew.

The muffin thing I have learned to cope with, 'biscuits' however......

IMO, quite a lot.

Muffins are rubberier and overflow the top of their frilly bit (hence the term "muffin top"). Cupcakes are crumblier, don't tend to have such a variety of fillings (you get chocolate chip ones but that's about it IME) but there's quite a trend in cupcakes with very fancy toppings at the moment.

Edit: I've just had a cupcake that a lovely lady in the village made (Barbara, should you happen to have found MTO, thanks!). It was a plain sponge mix, with a bit in the middle hollowed out and filled with jam then whipped cream. It then had some of what was taken out of the middle put back on as a lid. If I'd read this thread before eating it I'd have taken a picture.

Assuming that Norwegian stykke is anything like German stücke, then this would be
round piece (item, thing)?
rather than round peace (calm, opposite of war)

I think that is what you meant, but just checking  :tu:

You are quite right, I mean piece and not peace. My brain sometimes short out when I write English.

Medic82 I assumed that is what you meant. But just thought I would check.  :salute:

does Norway have an equivalent to Marmite that is a "bit love it or hate it"? (maybe involving pickled rotting herrings for a guess?)
