Case XX forum
on: November 26, 2013, 12:45:49 AM
Anybody know of a Case XX forum. I sent a brown jigged bone knife out for repair and I get this back. I don't even know what this is. I figure a Case forum would know in a second.

Looks like a Slimline trapper, pattern #048.  One blade or two?  The nice thing about Case is that the info you need is stamped right on the tang.  There should be a 4 or 5 digit number stamped there, plus perhaps some letters.  The first number is the handle material, the second is the number of blades, and the next two or three are the model.  If I'm right, you'd have a X1048SS there.....

A slightly more useful link for you than Victor's....  ;)

I have this page bookmarked, very useful resource.  I own a Case or two or three or four or.........  ::)

Yep!  The pattern # on a Case is a useful thing for sure.  They do use the same pattern number for different models at times, specifically the same frame with a different number of blades.  The number does help narrow it down though.  :tu:  If 2XTap were still around, he'd be able to tell you the day it left the factory, who assembled it, the delivery driver who picked it up from the factory, etc.....  ;)

Here is the model. That is what I sent in for repair. I think they took my blade and stuck it in this body.

Yep!  That's a stainless Slimline Trapper.  The 6 indicates juigged bone handles, the 1 is a single blade, the 048 the pattern, and the SS stainless.  See?  No need for a Case forum, we got ya covered.  :)  Nice knife by the way, mine is a 31048CV.  Yellow Derlin handles and Chrome Vanadium (carbon) steel.

But now it is wrong? What is the material now? What is X1048? It isn't bone is it?

I just put the X in as a placeholder.  Didn't want to make a total assumption on the handle material.  6 is Case's number for bone.  It doesn't indicate color, just the material.  My small Texas Jack is a 62032, with blonde bone.  If you sent them a brown-handled one and they sent you the blue, they technically did send you the exact same model.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too happy about that.  >:(  I'd say get in touch with them and explain what you sent in and got back.  Case's customer service has an excellent reputation.  They're actually part of the same company as Zippo.  Hopefully they can make this right for you.

I don't mind the blue at all. I like it better than what I sent in. I am just trying to figure out what it is. I sent in a brown-tan jigged bone. This is perfectly smooth. Is this bone?

Ah ok, misunderstood you.  Yes, both smooth and jigged bone have the same number, 6.  A 6 indicates bone, jigged Derlin, and laminated wood.  It's obviously not laminated wood, and if it was Derlin, the word CASE on the shield would have an oval around it.  You have a blue-dyed smooth bone handled knife there.  Case has a pretty large number of colors for their bone.

No problem.  :tu:  I have a weakness for well-made slipjoints.  :)  There's almost always a Case, Rough Rider, Buck, or sometimes a Kabar Barlow on me along with a larger folder and a SAK.  There's just something about traditional patterns that tickles my fancy.  Is this the only traditional you own?

And the beast a Shark tooth. That is about the extent of my case collection. I like the way they are built like tanks compared to a SAK. But I like the precision of a SAK.

Thanks!  That pic really doesn't do that knife justice.  The bone has this very slight green cast to it, in person it's one of the prettiest slippies I own.  :tu:

Between @GigaHz and @jerseydevil on the slip joints, and @Aloha007 on the G-Shocks,  I will never have enough money to get all these things.  Not to mention @Fattygalore on the electronic scaled SAKs.

I would love to win the lottery, but I think a requirement for that is to buy a ticket
