I think with both ebay buyer protection and paypal protection, there's not that much that can go wrong...

You should be fine. Personally I look to see that a new seller has at least a history of a few purchases so they understand the whole ebay concept better.

I prefer buying from sellers with a higher sell count and close to 100% positive feedback. As others have said you should be safe either way.
