Here's the follow-up:

First off, it belongs to the older daughter, not the son (Generic first name so I wasn't sure which it belonged to).

She is off to college in Colorado.  She is HUGE into mountaineering, rock climbing, minimalist camping/hiking/trekking and backcountry skiing.  Her grandmother (the whole family lives on the farm) said that she becomes very attached to her gear and that she will be ecstatic to get her SAK back.  She flies out of Philly airport regularly for trips to Europe and Latin America and that's where it was confiscated.  The family is trying to figure out a prank to return it to her.

My wife dropped it off this afternoon.

Unbelieveable.

Wow what a weird thing to happen. I would be the happiest person on earth if I got back a long lost SAK.
I'm the milk man!

This might be a candidate for "Temporary Sticky" since we all will want to hear in great detail the prank the family comes up with and outcome.

The note in the door idea was still the best!

We never heard what the exact prank was :-\

This fall, her Grandfather (the patriarch of the family) died.  He was out hacking and his horse came home without him.  They later found him in dead, in a field.  :(  While this sounds sad, he was extremely passionate about his horses, so that's not a bad way to go, in your 80's.

Anyway, we saw Embrey (her first name and what made me suspicious as to the knife's owner) at the memorial service.  She indeed received her knife back. :)

You could have made a business card with some security agency logo on it, send it with a note:

"You have been cleared, for now. Here's your knife back. You'll be monitored."

 :D :D :D :D
