Silly they are Aussie :P They were discovered by the national public youth radio network JJJ while they were in high school. Ben have you given The Smiths a listen ? "Girl Friend in a  coma " was one of their singles , jolly title. I think their best song was "this charming man"  . Maybe do not watch the video ,that is lame. Morrissey the lead singer , was/is the king of melancholy.

"Downunder Mod (that sounds dirty, doesn't it?)"

If you willing to go a bit obscure, your list reminds me of one of my all time favorites. There was a little known band in the mid 90's named Common Children and their album Delicate Fade is at the top of my list. It's hard to find, but well worth the effort IMO. Some people thought their first album was a bit too Pearl Jam-ish, but their second kept all the intensity but mellowed it out quite a bit. A very mature album IMO. It's not too often you hear a guy screaming over top of a cello (track 3). ;)

Here's a link to my google result...

(I always liked Mazzy Star lyrics)

I want to hold the hand inside you
I want to take a breath thats true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth
You live your life
You go in shadows
Youll come apart and youll go black
Some kind of night into your darkness
Colors your eyes with whats not there.

Fade into you
Strange you never knew
Fade into you
I think its strange you never knew

A strangers light comes on slowly
A strangers heart without a home
You put your hands into your head
And then smiles cover your heart

Fade into you
Strange you never knew
Fade into you
I think its strange you never knew

Fade into you
Strange you never knew
Fade into you
I think its strange you never knew
I think its strange you never knew

another good group I really injoyed (mellow) is; "The Sundays"

Yeah, that's a decent song, though I'm prety sure it's from their third album which was done on a slim budget and didn't seem to have as much of the creative spark of their first two. :( But, good nonetheless. :)

Oh, just to set the record straight... The band sounded a bit like Nirvana at the begining, not Pearl Jam. A bit of a difference... I just read over the post again and saw my mistake. :P
