Sacrificial Tool?
on: May 25, 2008, 02:51:32 PM
So does anybody have a sacrificial tool for the really grotty jobs ???, you know the jobs where there's every chance your going to damage the edge, or maybe even loose it ???

I always use my Vic Huntsman for those type of job's, and despite looking after it, before, during and after, I always feel a little guilty for doing it ::)

So whats your 'sacrificial' tool ???
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Can't say I have one TBH.  I carry my Swisstool pretty much everywhere and I would be happy to use it for any task.
I'm back!!

At home i use my old wave for anything that i don't know what might happen. It's not in great shape anyway and i'm thinking of sending it back to Leatherman to get it sorted but it gets used for the "dirty" jobs.

I used to carry Kamp King knives just for this purpose.

Kamp Kings were basic Boy Scout pattern knives (blade, awl, bottleopener/screwdriver, canopener) which were ridiculously cheap and available at lots of hardware and sporting goods stores.  Made in USA and cost less than $3.  Fairly durable tools except for a tendency to rust.

Got an old style Wave for when things are expected to get nasty. When we were re-shingling my roof last fall it came in pretty handy. Cutting agregate shingles does gruesome things to even the best knife steel. :P

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I use my beater tools for this purpose. I almost have two or more  of every tool I own and one is mint and one is a beater.

Mine would be my Kick, though I might make my Surge that tool in the future. Usually, though, if it's going to get really ugly I'll try to make sure I have my toolbox handy.

I use either a Bear Jaws non-locking tool or a Chinese Bear copy. The import has been a fine tool excepting the Phillips screwdriver (rounded a bit). My Wave slacks and lets the Bears do all the work, but boy, one day that Wave's going to come out of the sheath and really show it's stuff (so far it's only cut medical gauze... ::) )!!!!!

My Leatherman C2 Juice and/or my Leatherman S2. I just used my C2 as weight to throw some 550 cord over a tree branch. I figured if it got stuck in the tree it's a lot better than losing one of my Vics.

If I have to do something that I think will leave its mark on a SAK or MT, I usually just break out the toolbox and use my regular tools.  I don't feel much attachment to a regular screwdriver or regular long-nose pliers.  To a MT or SAK, I consider them highly enough to not trash them.

By a ton. I actually beat the living crap out of the thing and it comes back for more. I actually asked the CS at Lowes how many times it could be returned and she told me as long as I bring in the broken piece with Kobalt on it I can exchange them forever,

every time I've tried that, used a cheapie/who cares tool it always lets me down!
so I got rid of "most" of them and now either use my Kick or old Spartan I have for abyss work,
they do the job but way better than the door stops I used before.
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

I here ya and I was the same way until someone returned my Surge at work by skidding about 6o feet on the floor. So I bought the Kobalt as a loaner. It actually impressed me with how well it is made. WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the suspension. However You can find it on sale a couple times a year for 10 bucks.

Bah!  No mere skidding could hurt the mighty SURGE!!!  :D

Sacrificial tool? Nah, whatever tool I am carrying fulfills that role. I figure if it breaks or gets damaged it adds to the overall multitool group consciousness on how tools perform in a given role.

It's my civic duty. :salute:
