Maxam Survival Knife.
on: February 15, 2014, 05:47:16 PM
I was at a local store that is clearing all their knives for new stock when I laid eyes on this monstrosity. I can tell a bad knife a mile away but the very low price beckoned and I figured I would buy it out of curiosity. Yes, it is a Maxam knife which I think is synonymous for Piece of Feces most of the times. I can tell you I wasn't disappointed.

The sheath is terrible. The blade was not even sharp. The back of this blade I think wouldn't do much if you had to use it as a saw. Mildly disappointed that there was no hidden compartment containing the derivative small fishing kit. What?!?!? No survival kit...why...what kind of a survival knife is this? Oh I see, there is a conical pointy thing on the hilt designed for either breaking glass or bludgeoning small woodland creatures who are caught unaware by ones mall ninja ways. See it has a tanto blade shape that is much beloved by the mall ninja type. It is black also...so this knife is doomed I tell ya, doomed...

The sheath sucketh much air. Ever wonder why this one has two knife ties...that is because the top one with the snap is so loose, it is purely decorative...much like this knife one could successfully argue.

Yes, Maxam is quite proud of this product. Note the name emblazoned on the blade. I must say, the handle is comfortable enough. What is slightly worrisome however is the slight lateral movement of the blade. It is ever so slightly perceptible, but does lend a little excitement as you practice your knife fighting techniques in front of a mirror.

Yes folks, if you see this in the wilds, give it a wide berth and don't feed it as it may follow you home unwanted and much unloved.

Maybe that is what it is...but they clearly stated "survival knife".

You know your dealing with top quality kit when you notice that there is only one bolt holding the handle to the blade. Note the middle one is fake. They didn't even bother making it look metallic in nature.

were it will truly "shine" is if you try to use it. I had one of the 70's cheapie-survival knives with the hollow handle with the fish hooks and matches inside and the first time I tried cutting something the thing snapped in half (with hardly any pressures/force).

the metal is the true tell, way to brittle or bending/breathing soft

Well, I'm sure you could bludgeon someone quite successfully with that knife.  Oh and hey, if the blade broke in half you might actually get a usable point!

Did you try to disassemble it? I wonder if the first bolt is as far as the tang goes.

I have tried. Not sure exactly how they pinned the blade to the handle. I have used the proper bits on both sides...but when I turn either, the opposite side rotates. When I lock both sides down and try to turn one...it won't turn. Not prepared to drill it out to see how bad the construction is. From what I gather, the blade won't come apart from the handle. I guess that is somewhat comforting.

You can try a strong magnet to see if there's any metal in the middle of handle.
