First off, congrats on your baby girl!   As for the other new addition to the family....  ;)  Like Gareth said, try pulling back on the lock tabs a bit.  That should raise the drivers a tiny bit, and also make them easier to get out.  I figured that out with my Strata when I first got it, and it works well.  :tu:

I had the opportunity to test the Flik's can opener on a can of Spaghetti-Os yesterday... mega fail. I only managed to puncture the can twice, and it was at such a perpendicular angle that the cuts could not be joined. The hook on the opener would not grab the lip of the can at the angle necessary to make progress around the can.

Has anyone successfully opened a can with the Flik opener?

Yes, but it was rough. I just use it for a scribe and awl. Better carry a p38 with your flik.

Now you mention it, I think I had better success using it left handed.  IIRC I could get it going right handed but it was a trial.  As DTT says; it's a far better scrapper/awl.

I actually did think to try it left handed and it did penetrate (hehe) the can once like that but it was too unnatural feeling.

I really want to like the Flik, but it is coming up short of the Wave more than I thought it would.

Ok, I tried again. This time, the victim was a can of Healthy Choice Zesty Gumbo (btw, I added a few squirts of Tabasco and some jalapeno cheddar venison summer sausage to it - yum). The Flik fared much better this time - I was able to open the can, although it was not as effortless as it was with my Wave, Wingman, MP400, PPP, or even PowerDuo. So basically the Flik opener passes this portion of the rdub assessment, but with a C- at best. Maybe a D - might need to retest to earn credit, like I did with Western Civ :)

Still loving these pliers.

I am throwing in the towel on the Flik. I have been using for a month at work, and I find myself wishing I had my Wave. It will never be my preferred tool over my Wave so I am moving on. I will miss the awesome pliers, but I can live without everything else. The Wave does everything else better than the Flik. And it's thinner. And it's lighter. Etc, etc...

Gerber is so close to getting it completely right, but still off.

I really like it, for the most part. It's a very capable tool with a lot of awesome features. It's just not for me.

I really like the Flik and I'm sorry it didn't work out for you.  You are absolutely right though in that the drivers, can opener etc are pretty tiny and awkward.  It would indeed be better if it had longer, more substantial tools, but then you lose the sliding head.  Or, you end up with an amazingly fat tool like Leatherman's attempt to make a Gerber, the OHT.

Neither my hands, nor my patience are big enough to EDC the OHT.

That's really saying something because the Flik is a fat bugger, as it is.

I've only handled a Flik when we bought one for my step father in-law, and I liked it.  I haven't handled an OHT yet, but I'd like to, even though it is quite ugly.

Here's a pic for comparisons between the two:

The OHT is one of those tools that is close to being perfect, it just needs a lot of refinement. Good comparison

an even betetr comparison, IMHO, would be teh Freehand and teh OHT. The Freehand basically being a FLIK on steroids, sadly sharing it´s tiny drivers.

I didn't even think of the Freehand, but you're right, it would be a closer match.  It's too bad they have such stubby drivers, I'm sure they could have figured out someway to get even just a little bigger ones.

I'm feeling the need to get an OHT, Flik and Freehand now.

As much as I would like to, my spending money is going towards Jeep upgrades.  Might have to see what I have for trades though.   :D
