Swiss Army Collection: What's your focus?
on: March 12, 2014, 12:07:29 AM
Thought this might be an interesting question and a chance to show off what you've got.  Given that there are SOOOO many Swiss Army Knives and SOOOO many different sizes, styles, colors, patterns, etc. etc. etc. I think most of us end up moving into a specific niche of what we're looking for.  Whether it's a specific color, size, model, or whatever we all have our favorites.  So what's yours?  What do you focus on when collecting.

For me, it's the 58mm.  I've got a display case with 31 different models of 58mm sized knives.  I've also got a case with 32 different colors of cellidor. (See attached pics.)  My new quest is colored Alox knives with a focus on (you guessed it) 58mm.

My focus are advertising alox knives of sizes 58mm / 84mm 90mm and 93mm. I guess there are 20,000 to 40,000 diffrent of them - here I am still busy for a while.

Swiss Army knives .

Love the sleeping bags for some of them! :)

I suppose a related question to this could be: "How do you display or store your knives?"

84mm and 91mm Victorinox. Trying to get at least one of each model. I have one of every 84mm model that I know of. Every time I say this, though, someone pops up with a new one that haven't seen before. In 91mm, there are 5-6 newer (i.e. post 1950) models to find, and many older ones from the 1903 Catalog that are going to be tough if not impossible to find.

ARE YOU SAYING I DO NOT HAVE TO COLLECT THEM ALL ?!?!

if the price is right, then I like to buy it (flea market, pawn shop, etc)  as far as buying new,  that just depends on current cash flow and how I feel when I see the item.

I am fascinated by many of the ones i have gotten in a lot on ebay and such, and I am just as happy with a heavily used one as a NIB one.
If I can help, let me know

After jumping around a bit, it seems my passion is with used up and worn out 93mm red alox.  If you have some, I'm all ears.
Lurking with a large collection of sharp knives!

My passion is for vintage swiss knives (not only wenger or victorinox, but also other local swiss knifemakers), from the 70s back to the 19th century. Every size, every model. My passion for special, limited numbered alox, is very low...

I fluctuate between "whatever could make a great EDC" and accumulating different versions of the Spartan and the Camper.

Started collecting 93mm Alox to start with.
But after getting almost everything I want in Alox (300+ as we speak) i've really just bought anything I like the look of in 74mm, 84mm, 91mm and 111mm.

That sounds like it could be a fun quest.  Does the Giant contain every tool that Wenger has/had?

At the moment, I'm mostly focused on just a few user SAKs.

I love Cadets, Pioneers (I prefer the old cross/brass liner Pioneers), my Swiss Champ, my 1980's Explorer, Spartans, Tinkers, and basically any of the two layer SAKS both Alox and Celidor. I'm thinking of getting a classic for my keychain so that I always have the SAK scissors nearby which I mostly use for personal man-scaping duty (fingernails/stray hairs, etc..).

Two layers mostly, standard Soldier or Pioneer configs. The rest are interesting for videos but don't do it for me personally.

I'm really all over the place with my sak selection. A lot of times I'll buy an older knife intending to use it, then I can't bring myself to.

(Image removed from quote.)

This one could be impossible to find. I'm not even sure it exists. I've only seen it in that catalog and never the real SAK. I had a thread here about that one some time ago and no one ever saw it.

I will on occasion buy random styles, but I don't consider those as collecting. Black ribbed Alox with silver shield on the other hand is my personal favorite style and I do consider those as a collection.

When colored alox went crazy a few years ago, I decided to focus on Farmers.  I also like the analog clock 91 mms

Of course there's a smattering of other SAK's but they are certainly not the "Focus"  :)

I collect mainly Soldiers. Finding all the different variants and specific years makes collecting quite fun.

I was also ''all over the place'' for SAK collecting but while I'm reducing my collection now, I discover that Soldiers variants in Alox are my favorites....but I don't have that many.

My KL 83 with brass liners and bail is my most loved(my birth year also and only Vic Solider with bail I know of)
Follow by a duo of odd Wenger SIs (One with no stamping on both side of the blades and one with two backside scales)

I was collecting Case Knives but started with the multiprint Classic SD festival series.  I only collect the scale patterns I like.   My idea of artwork:

I recently started collecting alox mostly classic but a few cadets.   A knife in violet alox is my holy grail.

Was that the KL83 with the damaged blade? If so, good to hear you like it that much :)
