Minor mod, guidance (maybe help) needed
on: March 13, 2014, 03:13:41 AM
I love my Technologist (cyber-yeoman) and as someone who works with small screws and nuts, it is an amazing tool.

I have a 42 piece set of bits that will fit in the cybertool, but are intended to be held in place via magnet instead of the small ball bearing.

so I bought an extra one of these

and would like to connect it to the extension so I have an adapter to use my other bits.

anyone have a good way to "wield" these together?

I do not have access to a wielder, and would like this to be a permanant junction.  any guidance would be great,  or if anyone is willing to take on the project, let me know how much you would charge.

if I had better tools, I would "key" the two so they fit together better, but alas, those types of tools are not available to me.

here is one of the kits I have, and the one I took the extension for this from

If I can help, let me know

I wouldn't bother to weld. I would bother to get some 2mm rare earth magnets and some jb weld and put a magnet on the bottom of the extension if you want to use it in a Cybertool.

I would go with JB Weld, or another good 2 part epoxy, and a strong magnet.

Detron,

JB Weld is good, and if you do intend to use 2 part epoxy, do take a close examination of their psi or rating.  I have seen and experiment with some, and some of them do 'crack' easily.

That's gonna be a nice mod. Jb weld works great.

I can put a magnet between the two easily (have plenty of those things), however, if the magnet is to help hold the bits, it is not needed, there is a good one in the holder already.

I grew up on a farm, if I was around there, that would be what I would do, but, I am not.

I've heard the magnet suggestion many times here... My Q is, if you attach the magnet to the inside of the bit driver, does this not interfere with the original stock double-sided bits from fitting in???

I am trying to not alter the actual driver in any way, mod the accessories, not the tool.  It may not matter, but doing this mod as described below, I can also use this with any CyberTool.

If welding the only clean solution you have for something like that is tig. You may go and ask a tig welder how much would it charge you for that.

You can try custom vehicle shops, places were they weld fire extinguishers, maybe pot and frying pans factories, etc.

Going straight to places were welders work gives you the possibility to be able to talk to the welder personally and in my experience they do it for very little money. Once i had a motorcycle swingarm fully welded by a welder on a frying pan factory who did an outstanding job and didnt even charge just because he had little to do that day  :tu:

One question first do you really need that much reach? I mean, the CT drives has some decent reach already, so would adding the length of the extension really be neccesary?

What I was thinking was a bit different. I'd try to get the extension out of the adapter (not sure how it's attached/connected to it  ) and JB Weld the extra bit you got straight into the adapter. Would make for a much more secure driver I think. I'll have to get me one of those kits and try if it can be done myself.

I plan on lopping off most of the extension, I do not need the length,(should have mentioned that I guess).  I have thought about trying to remove the extension, I need a time to try that, but I have to wait for the weekend.  I did not want to wait on posting and seeing what other thoughts people have that might help in my process

While waiting on my extra cybertool bit to proceed with my little mod,  I decided to try to find a way to hold the extra bits.  I went into Lowe's and found this for $6

not a bad price, but since all I wanted was the plastic bit holders, it was sort of expensive.

so I bought 2

anyway, I got home and opened one just to get to the bit holders and see how good/bad they were.  they were just fine for what I wanted.

then I noticed this little part of the package

RATCHETING!!!!!!!
:D   :ahhh   this is perfect!  if I can get it apart without breaking it.

Step 1,  remove the spinning palm rest

Step 2, get the long extension that is included with this $6 purchase,  which by the way uses a spring inside to hold the bits, rather tight (ever get a bit stuck in a bad screw and the grip on the bit was stronger than the magnet holding it in?  I have!)

Step 3,  Drop it into the back end of the screw driver narrow end first

Step 4,  Hammer through to knock out the ratcheting mechanism  (pay no attention to the hack sawed portion )

now that the ratcheting mechanism is out, I will be using this for the mod, and the end that accepts the bits is magnetic.
the bit shown in this picture is the one I ordered for the mod

I plan on putting it in the CT

and then ensuring I do not connect too far up the bit that it would interfere with the driver

this will give me a short adapter that can MAGNETICALLY hold my other bits,  and it is 3 position ratcheting driver.
I feel for precision work this should hold up OK.

I am going to wait for the bit I ordered to arrive before using some JB Weld, I will use which ever bit looks the worst.

the reason I started this whole thing was due to my desire to have access to more bits.

Bits will now be:

CyberTool comes with
Torx #8, #10, #15
Hex 4mm
Flat 4mm
Phillips #2
Pozidrive #0, #1

These were removed from my add on set, so now added to the above is

Torx #4, #5, #6, #7, #9, #20
Hex .7mm, .9mm, 1.3mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm,   1/16", 5/64", 3/32", 1/8", 5/32"
Flat  1mm,   1/16", 5,64", 3/32", 1/8"
Phillips #000, #00, #0, #1
3 blade phillips 2mm, 3mm

since I bought 2 of these precision screwdrivers (Might go get 2 more)  I have enough plastic bit holders to devise some system to carry the bits (or have them in my bag)

I am super excited to get the bit in so I can improve the accessories to my Technologist!!

I cant understand why Vic didnt offer more bits?  I had looked several times for bits with no luck and had the wallworld one you have.  I had thought of building up the shank part of the cheap extender then filing it down to fit the CT.  I gave up I sure hope this works out.

found out the set from Wallworld has loads of duplicates!     if I want 44 pieces, I do not want only 23 unique ones!! :twak:

I am still going to make the ratcheting mod,  but the original idea was just solved,  and super simple.     should have figured this out a long time ago

anyway,  a 1/4" wide by 3/4" strip of electrical tape.

yep     I tried tape before, but it was too tight. instead of solving it, I dismissed it.

nice fit too

so, about a hundredth of a cent worth of tape, and this works great!   since I doubt I will be using it every day, so this will work until I can do something a little more permanent.

but here is a short vid on how strong the magnet and the adapter are.

I rather like this mod. I'm always reluctant to try to do much with my cybertools just becuase the bits are hard to find and very limited. This could make it much more interesting.

if you attach the magnet to the inside of the bit driver, does this not interfere with the original stock double-sided bits from fitting in???

It probably would. Thats why I'd put it on the stem of this extension.

Alternatively, you can turn a 1/4" socket with the can opener pretty well. Get a 1/4" and a 4mm, put the magnets in the bottom of those, and TADA! Bit holders.

Ok I don't have a CT but have used some of these bit kits.

Assuming that the shank of the extension holder that came with the sets you bought securely fits into the vic holder, wouldn't it make scene to cut down the shank & JB weld or epoxy a magnet to the tip of that?

If the magnet were fitted to the shank of the extension holder instead of in the vic holder you could use it with any of the CT's you have.

Sorry if this post is a bit rambling but I've just finished a late shift at work

The CyberTool bit driver is not magnetic, and uses the ball bearing friction retention method to hold the bits in.

every set of bits I have ever seen use a magnetic retention method.

I am trying to make an adapter that connects to the Cybertool via the ball bearing at the base and has a magnetic retention system at the other end.

this will solve all of my problems.  the ratcheting mechanism that I found is just something I think is pretty cool, and will do, "because I can" and for no real need.
