If this one is as good as everyone says it is Derek then the price on it is certainly right.

It's interesting that the package days it is child proof but I haven't found anything that would make it even remotely child proof.

The lid is sprung with a pretty robust spring so maybe that's the child proof feature?  It does open and close with some significant authority though.  It feels quite nice.

We can't see the child proofing  because we are just a bunch of kids, mentally anyways.

My Ronson lit its first cigar last weekend (sorry, no pics), and I'm happy enough with it to have ordered some more butane for it.  Reliability thus far has been excellent.  Here's hoping it lasts a long time.  Honestly, though, at less than $10 a pop I won't be disappointed if I have to buy a new one every year.

It's interesting that the package days it is child proof but I haven't found anything that would make it even remotely child proof.
Apparently there is a detailed test protocol for demonstrating the child resistance of a lighter.  In a nutshell, if no more than 15% of the test group (comprised of children between 42 and 51 months old) are able to operate the (dummy) lighter within the parameters of the test, the lighter passes and is considered suitably child resistant.  In the case of the Ronson, I'm guessing the force required to depress the button would be difficult for such a young child to generate.

The childproofing consists of a heavy spring under the trigger button.  It isn't necessary as the button returns to top without that spring.  It's much more comfortable to use without, and it's real easy to remove.

That seems about as effective a method of child proofing as a sign that says "DON'T TOUCH" on the cookie jar.   ::)

I have been carrying the Jet Light pretty much constantly since I got it, but other than pulling it out to play with it once in a while I really haven't used it for anything, so I can't really report on how well it's holding up.  At least other than to say so far it has lit every time I played with it, and the finish has held up well so far.

My Ronson was working really well until I tried to refill it.  Now, the kindest word I can use to describe it is "inconsistent".  After I refilled it the first time and the problems lighting and staying lit started (immediately), I bled it down and tried to fill it again, but the situation did not improve.  Oddly, if I cycle the flame adjustment screw all the way down and back up, it seems to do better, but this fix only lasts a short while.

I'm at a bit of a loss and am considering sending it back to the manufacturer, as I think it has a one-year warranty.  I'm not ruling out operator error (although I read the directions twice) or bad butane (my assumption that Ronson lighters should work best with Ronson butane seemed logical, but may ultimately be incorrect).

Any suggestions?

Yep, I would start with completely emptying it via the purge valve. Not just once either, after it empties let it sit for a while and then do it again. Try lighting it and then purge it a third time. No matter how good the lighter is you will always get some air build up in it and that causes it to intermittently go out on you. Of course it also could be impurities in the gas clogging it up. Sometimes, if you are lucky, the clog happens at the top and you can clean it out with a straight pin.

Looks like a good thread to join... Until Boss buy out lighterforum, or make new sub here, that is.... :D :D

I'm using Z-Plus butane insert for Zippo... Picked it up here on forum in BST...

So far (well over a year) it works flawlessly... And I'm (sadly) a smoker... So daily, more than 15-20 times a day!!

My ONLY complaint (and that's even very flimsy complaint) is that it's only momentary. It would be perfect if it has some kind of lock so it can stay on without pressing it.

The Ronson is pretty much the same- let go of the button and the fire goes away.

I just bought one of the Ronson lighters at Canadian TIre tonight.  It was under $7, so the price was right.

Thanks JA and DM.  I made sure it was completely empty and tried refilling it again, but the problem persists.  I've pretty much decided it is too finicky for me and have gone back to Bics.  Hope the rest of you guys are having better luck.  I'm actually quite fond of Bic lighters for most of my needs anyway; the one area where I think there is significant room for improvement is wind resistance.

Have you seen this recent thread by Jie?

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,52436.0.html

I have never had a refillable butane lighter that lasted for any length of time.  So far this one has held up, but then I haven't had to refill it yet.
