what should I know about SOG
on: June 07, 2008, 01:47:34 AM
Hello folks, thanks to all of you who welcomed and helped me yesterday, now while looking into a tool for my customers I now want an MT for my self, something for the back country with less machanical tools, I like the idea of picking the tools on an SOG but know very little about them which tools do you like on an SOG? I'm thinking the saw, serated blade, plain edge, scissors, awl, file, LG flat head sharpened to a chisel, and maybe the V cutter or serrated line cutter not sure of their function yet, thanks again guys.

Hey sixgun - I've no idea about SOG myself, but did you try multitool.org's reviews here?
I used to come here a lot.

The ability to switch out tools really attracted me to SOG MTs. Next was the geared pliers, then the 1/4 adapter.
So it was my first MT.

What I found out (for myself) is the scissors did not work for me, they were a disappointment. The V-cutter or that model was not out when I ordered it, but got it soon after it was released. I wanted to cut cord cleanly and fast, and their scissors didn't do that.

The tool covers seemed like a good idea, in theory, but in practice they are not very comfortable, but have been redesigned since, they seem better now, from what I read.

The 1/4 adapter is nice but it means you have to carry separate tools or have a special pouch with the tool (which I don't have).

It is a big tool and if I were going light, it would not be my first choice.

The tools that come with it now are pretty good for camping/hiking. They cover most bases unless you have special needs.
The SOG is a great tool and I'm glad I have it but it wouldn't be my first choice for camping/hiking.

judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

Keep in mind that the number of long implements is limited depending on the tool due to the way the pliers fold into the handle.

The Pocket PowerPlier can have two long tools.

The Paratool and the PowerLock can have four long tools.

The long tools include the serrated line cutter, V-cutter, scissors, plain blade, serrated blade, file and saw.

Also be aware that some of the "long" tools like saws are shorter than other brands of similar size.  The saws on the SwissTool, Core and Surge for example are much longer than the SOG's, which could be important if you are a saw user.  Here's a look at different saws I did a while back:

I'm curious if it's a knockoff of a branded Mastergrip tool or if it is a knockoff of something else but called a Mastergrip by the knockoff making company?

It's a cheap hunk of crap made in China, actually called MasterGrip, either by the company that made it or the company that imported it and sold it in a package with a cheap lighter knockoff and cheap flashlight knockoff.  I'd say most likely the company that imported and distributed it, as the manufacturers crank them out and sell them to anyone who wants to put their own name/logo on them.

I'll supply more pics later, in another thread.  While it is a cheap piece of junk, it does have some interesting features.
