What Is The Best Gerber Multi-tool Available Today?

My only experience with Gerber multi-tools was years ago with the original Gerber.I remember the plier/wire cutter could be deployed with one hand, which made it unique and handy during that era.I do also remember it pinched my fingers on numerous occasions.LOL.

So to my original inquiry. What do you consider to be the best/most useful currently produced Gerber multi-tool?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Personally I think the mp600 series is pretty awesome I personally carry a mps600 pro scout most days. The mp800 deserves a mention as well.

I'd go with the MP400 over the 600,but that's more down to size. I'm fond of the Balance as well, but you could go too far wrong with a 600 ProScout,as hrvstmn31 says :tu:

I should also point out a mp600 w/carbide cutters is the tops. When I got my pro scout the cutters on the head were damaged most likely due to cutting smething too hard.

For me, I'd say a blunt nose MP600 is the best.

Hmmm, I'd say for me it's a toss-up between the MP400 Compact Sport and the MP600 Pro Scout.  The 400 is a smaller tool but is no little toy for sure.  I've used my 400 hard and it's never let me down.  The 600 is a beast that just keeps going and going.  They get almost equal carry time from me, but I've said many times that the Pro Scout is my favorite multitool, and I'll stand by that statement.  :tu:

Of course, when in doubt, buy both.  >:D

I'll suggest the MP600 variant which suits your usage best.

There are a lot of different pliers and also different tool loads.  It is possible to mix and match if you can't find exactly what you want in the standard off-the-shelf models (but you'll probably have to buy extra donor tools to get the exact components you want as Gerber don't seem to sell them separately).

Just to give you an idea as to the size difference between the 400 and 600 Kirky and I mentioned, here's a side by side.  400 (actually a 450) at top, 600 at the bottom.

Thing with the Flik is its great if your not screw driver dependant. It's drivers are small, thin 2d jobs which more than a few people have had issues with. They worked fine for me,much to my own surprise, but I seldom carry mine due to the locking oho blades.

The Diesel is a refined MP600,but some folks here have reported quality issues. I have one, which I'm considering modifying to a bladeless configuration

The MP 600 and the Diesel have been mentioned, and they have a good reputation.

Note that nowadays LM too makes a tool with a similar opening system, the OHT, if that is the function you like on a Gerber.

I did notice the size difference when viewing the specs.I see that it's made in China and I would prefer to buy USA.

I'm leaning towards the Diesel or 600.

I looked at the HTL and it looks so homely.LOL .Although I just checked and I can buy it for about $55.00 which places it in the good deal category.

Thanks for the picture.I don't have a Rebar yet but one is on the way.The Rebar appears to be an upgraded PST.

That's been said quite a bit about the Rebar and it basically is an upgraded PST but slightly thicker with more tools and locks.

As much as I like the Gerber mp 600/400' series. I don't like the limited access to the inside tools.  Its probably me being spoilt by the wider opening Swisstools and outside opening leathermans.

That being said, I do like Gerber's no nonsense approach.
The biggest weakness for me however besides the limited access is the blade. Its horrible, I have absolutely no confidence in it whatsoever. But those 2 bad points are forgotten when I flick open those pliers...especially the blunt nose or maybe its the needle nose, could be the fisherman or even the cable cutter.....in short the tool is remarkable in that its available in such a diverse selection of plier heads.

That's why I've got so many :D
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

That's a good point, the drivers are short on the MP600 but when you flick open those pliers you just have to overlook that. I don't think there will ever be any better so far as OHO pliers go.

The short drivers on the MP's is usually mentioned as a put-off by many people.  Personally, I've never found it to be an issue, same with the inside access to tools.  My favorite LM's are all inside-tool models as well.

Excellent choice.  :tu:  Be sure to let us know your thoughts, and remember - when flicking a Gerber, only hold one handle, and the rest's in the wrist.  :)

LOL. I wish that my original Gerber wasn't lost.It was a decent tool other than the finger pinching issue.

Good choice, the pro-scout is a very nice model with those great scissors and the bit adapter helps to make up for the tool's stubby drivers  :multi:.  Add a SAK of your choice and you will no longer care about the mp600 blade being kind of awkward :tool:.

The tool coupler was a determining factor in choosing this model.I won't carry their bits because I have a small tube filled with 30 bits that fits a 1/4" drive but I did need the coupler.
